intriguing collection of the sea's effect on the imagination

A collection/retelling of stories, folk tales and lore, and beliefs of seamen around the world, from explanations of sea phenomenon (St. Elmo's Fire and waterspouts) to various omens, from Davy Jones to sea monsters to ghost ships to mermaids and mermen. Very interesting, esspecially for folklore fanatics. Grade: B+

A Decent Collection

This is a decent collection of superstitions, as far as I can tell, but it could be organized more concisely. As it is, trying to sort through all of the additional text to get to the superstitions within is a little like panning for gold. Lots of superfluous data and then a nugget or three of treasure at the bottom.
