Once over lightly done in an entertaining style

Author Daniel Cohen used to pump out books like this fairly regularly in the 1970s. He would take a paranormal or occult subject and write an introductory book on the subject aimed mostly at readers who had only a casual interest in the subject and wanted to learn more. Most of his books were aimed at institutional sales, school libraries being a particular target. Thus it's sometimes not easy finding copies of his books without library fixtures.

Here, he takes on the subject of cryptozoology but restricts himself to the western hemisphere, primarily the US and Canada. He reviews the origins of various creatures in an engaging and friendly manner. He takes a middle of the road approach. He doesn't dismiss out of hand but doesn't accept uncritically either. It is easy to see that he's skeptical of most of the subjects discussed here but one gets the impression he's going out his way to give a fair hearing to all sides. He mostly succeeds.

There is no pretense on the author's part that he has done any original research on the subject; again this is just an overview for those casually interested. For those interested in following up there is a bibliography of more thorough works, both enthusiastic and skeptical.

Recommended for newcomers to the field although it is a little dated with a 1975 copyright date. Fans of Cohen won't be disappointed either.

Fun Book

Like the author of the previous post, I remember reading this book in 5th grade. It was in my elemenatary school library. It was a lot of fun and introduced me to a lot of the classics of fringe belief. The Loch Ness monster, Bigfoot, etc., and an interesting chapter on the Cardiff Giant. That was back in 1975/76, as we were entering a golden age of popular paranormal belief, with "In Search of..." soon to be on tv, and all those bigfoot documentaries in the theaters.

For those of you that love cryptozoology-don't buy this book.This book is mainly for those that have a passing interest in this type of subject.The entire book is written from a skeptics point of view as well.Book is fine for kids but if you're into Heuvelmans,Sanderson,Coleman,etc.-prepare to disappoint yourself.

I was mesmerized by the story that was told in the movie, "Rise of the Footsoldier," and purchased this outstanding book to obtain a more in-depth understanding of Cartlon Leach, hooliganism, bouncers, and the British gangster lifestyle. Leach is candid, articulate, and entertaining throughout his account. I also appreciated his willingness to not only show the glamorous side of the underworld lifestyle, but also the devastating consequences associated with it. Highly recommended.

The reader is bound to be confused and baffled at parts of the book, but based on the feedback we have received from readers here and through direct email, we have chosen to continue to let it be available for now, until we have the time to make a more complete and comprehensive book on the subject.If you are looking for something that is out of the ordinary, that has plenty of room for personal exploration and experiment get it. If you are looking for a book that has been designed to be easily read - and mostly disgarded because it is just like all the others - then you might want to get something different. I've never read anything like it... and I don't mean that in a good way.

I read A LOT. I have four full bookshelves and a Kindle filled with a variety of fiction and non-fiction works. Keep that in mind as I tell you that this bears the prestigious achievement of being the most disjointed and incoherent book I've ever read. And I use the term "book" loosely. The most accurate way I can think to describe it would be to say it looks like the author attended a lecture and took a bunch of notes with the intention of writing a book. Then, when he tried to actually write it, he realized that he had no grammatical skills (which is evident throughout), so he just said, "screw it," and published the notes.

Here's an example: "Later, you try other patterns than what run your life on, to discover what they really mean." What? That's word for word, letter for letter. Here's another: "Next, you learn and explore new patterns sufficiently, that GROWING into the next best set of patterns for you, WONT be traumatic, and it won't require TRAUMA. Read that twice." I think I read it twice the first time I read it. Then I ignored the redundancy and tried to read it again and, then gave up, and now I, write, like this because, I forgot ho,w, to use c,o,m,m,a,s. These two sentences are not even close to the worst examples in the book. They both just happened to be on the last page I read when I decided I wasn't going to continue reading it.

Seriously, though, this thing is a chore to read and makes very little sense. As I write this review, there are only two other reviews for this book. They're 4 and 5 stars, which blows my mind. I'd accuse the author of writing them, but I know that's not possible because I can actually read the reviews without getting a sharp pain in my head.

This Guy Knows His Stuff

I've been studying under 20/20 (the former John Wingert) for years.

I swear--the guy knows his stuff. He makes NLP useable in daily life.

I took the one year training this book is based on. Reading this book can't replace the live training. And I bet some of it will be confusing without the live class. But if you don't learn a lot from it about adopting the patterns of successful people, I'd be shocked.

At this price, the book's a steal. (The live course was pretty expensive but worth it.) Grab it.

If the big one ever hits here in California, I'd grab my 20/20 materials and leave the Bandler, Grinder, Robbins and other NLP stuff on the shelf. That's no exaggeration. 20/20 is the real deal.

Learn modelling the easy way

This is what I was able to do after reading the book only once so that you could see how this book transforms me.

I bought this ebook yesterday , after reading it throught and watching the free modelling videos from the author on Tim Ferris
(they will teach you how to model in the best simple manner I have ever found , and yes I have read a LOT of NLP books ,and yet never found it sooooo simple and easy to do, but don't believe my word , just look on youtube twenty twenty tim ferriss)

I was so motivated that I took an ebook that I could never apply it fully in my life because I was focusing on content so applying the lessons created ressistance in myself , BUT this ebook taught me the importance of focus yourself on the process in an easy manner because now I know for the first time I have figure it out the way of sorting of the author, I discovered that the mindset I had was different , now I know how to think like him and so it is easy for me to put the learning into practice, because when you change your mindset the actions change don't you think?

besides this, this ebook includes modelling's examples on neville goddard , the best notes of his books ,so that you can learn from the great examples given, and a modelling project on Napoleon Hill , now I don't know about you but lots of people read that book but never took action on it, know you have the job already done because you will discover a modelling project made on his books and you will integrate his mindset so that you can take action in an easy manner.

Good as structure reference

When I purchased this book I was under the impression that this book would explain how to create a PDF from the ground up.
Sure - it does that; but one have to use a third party program to do it.
The line "Use the pdftk program to process PDF files from the command line" in the description mislead me to think that this tool was optional. It should have read something like "The pdftk program is used throughout the book to generate PDF files".
As it is I have had to check other sources to be able to generate my own PDF files from my own programs without pdftk.
Therefore this book only recieve three out of five stars from me; it misses the essential part that is the actual creation process of PDF files.

Excellent resource for the software developer working with PDF

This is an extremely useful book for the developer who wants to work with PDF files. John Whittington explains the details of how the PDF format (actually formats--there are several) is constructed.

This is a "low-level" book--in the sense of being useful to the software developer who needs to extract data from existing PDF files, or automate solutions that create PDF files. This is a splendid companion for a developer who is working with the iText (or iTextSharp) PDF libraries (or GhostScript).

To follow along you have to go out and buy more stuff. not really much help working from scratch. there are layers missing that one has to go somewhere else to get the 'special version' referenced in the text and examples.

About the Author

Georg F. Hoffmann, Dr.med.habil, MD, is Professor and Chairman of the University Childrens Hospital Heidelberg, Head of the Metabolic Center including the Newborn Screening Laboratory as well as Head of the Center for Rare Diseases, Medical Center University of Heidelberg Germany. He has been working in the field of diagnosis and treatment of patients with inherited metabolic diseases for over 30 years with the main emphasis on newborn screening as well as clinical and laboratory research on neurometabolic and intoxication type disorders (neurotransmitter defects, aminoacidopathies, organoacidopathies, and urea cycle disorders).

Johannes Zschocke, Dr.med.habil, PhD is Professor and Chair of Human Genetics at the Medical University Innsbruck, Austria, and is Director of the Division for Human Genetics and the Center for Medical Genetics Innsbruck. He has longstanding clinical and research experience in inherited metabolic diseases, with special expertise in genetic diagnosis and genotype-phenotype correlations.

If a book can teach common sense, this one is as likely to do so as any. Epstein, a University of Massachusetts psychologist, and Brodsky, a senior research associate at the Mental Health Center, Harvard Medical School, suggest that many "smart" people don't learn practical lessons from experience, and recommend ways to develop "experiential intelligence." Using a readers' quiz and human vignettes, the authors show how the experiential mind can subvert rational thinking, but also can supply wisdom. They describe the "language" of the experiental mind--action-oriented, attached to emotion and operating via images--and propose, contra Freud, that such influences are greater than the mind's unconscious. Epstein and Brodsky trace the role of constructive thinking in achievers, discuss its function in love and emotions, and offer guidance to parents on how to influence their children's thinking. Finally, they explain how readers can analyze their own interpretations of events, and train their experiental minds through cognitive self-therapy and meditation.

Some good ideas on how to fashion your thinking into more productive and constructive ways.

The fundamental underlying belief Epstein writes in the conclusion is that enlightened self-interest will lead us to the recognition that we live in one world and that the welfare of each of us is tied to the welfare of all. This leads us to the fact that we are emotional beings and should be aware of those things that make us feel good or bad about ourselves. He furthers the idea that love feels better than hate and it is to our advantage that we generate this emotion in the world.

Two Types of Constructive Thinking:

Emotional Coping:
1) Know which things you can do something about and which you can't. And if you can't don't waste time and energy with worry. Be Self-accepting.
2) Don't let little things bother you. Be resilient. Don't over estimate a things importance.
3) Consider yourself a worthwhile person regardless of your performance.
4) Dwell on positive events, not negative ones
5) Don't take things personally.
6) The ability to deal with failure, disapproval and with negative emotions generally.
7) Not to over-react or over-generalize.
8) Avoidance of black/white, categorical thinking and labeling
9) Avoidance of the tryanny of the "should".

Behavioral Coping
1) Be proactive rather than just imagining and or complaining
2) If you have an unpleasant tasks create a way to make the best of it.
3) Look at challenges as a opportunity, a way to stretch and grow rather than as threats.
4) Think encouraging thoughts to get you through the hard times
5) Think through carefully how to deal with unpleasant tasks.
6) Be independent able to act and trusts on ones own decisions.
7) Take reasonable, realistic risks.
8) Maintains a sense of purpose
9) Reaches out to help others and willing to accept help.

Human Beings have 4 basic needs to be balanced:
1) to obtain pleasure and avoid pain
Helpful belief: The world is a good and trusting place to be
2) to make sense out of your experience
Helpful belief: the world is predictable, controllable and meaningful that is faith in the universe.
I try to understand what is happening to me so that I can act with determination.
3) have satisfying relationships with others
Helpful Belief: That people are for the most part, supporting, accepting, and trustworthy.
4) think well of yourself
That I am adequate and worthy of respect and love.

Epstein states that the basic goal of therapy is to remove sensitivies and compulsions.
Some points are:
1) They develop from generalizations from past experiences.
2) They vary in their serverity
3) They become more intense in stressful situations.
4) Reflect faulty categorical thinking, all or nothing, .

Applying Constructive Thinking in the Workplace
1) Maintain a problem solving attitude.
Focus on solving problems--getting things done. Make sure of clear communication and what is expected of them.
2) Be a flexable thinker. Know that there is a time and place for different sort of thinking.
3) Pay close attention to inter-personal relationships at work.
4) Take advantage of serendipity. Believe that things will turn out reasonably well.

An optimistic outlook, a belief that one is in control of events, to tendency to interpret events as challenges rather than threats and commitment to long term goals.

Work on creating fewer stress events in ones life. Interpret events in less stressful ways,

Work on understanding and being aware of your intrepretations of events that trigger your sensitivities and compulsions. Identify the situations that you are touchy about. First is our construals, then secondary mentals processes and then behavioral decisions. It is possible to change your intrepretations to be more constructive. Epstein claims it is not willpower but the experiental mind that must change. Be wary of being negative and destructive about your own non-constructive thinking. It is a catch-22.

Some destructive behavior is:
1) Attacking: taking action to injure someone physically or psychologically.
2) Uncontrolled emotional expression
3) Overcontrolled emotional expression
4) Self Punishment
5) Excessive dependence
6) Excessive Independence
7) Withdrawal

This book explains how you can understand why you feel the way you do. Then, it helps you learn to improve your own self-confidence without anyone else being aware of what you are doing. Soon, you'll be able to carry on a normal conversation and people will stop and listen to you. You can do so many more things that you previously thought were for "other" people. This book will open your world up so you can really enjoy it to the fullest.

Great Insight Into The Federal Government As The Pusher-Man

The federal government has grown from its humble origins to the behemoth it is today. The question why this has become a basic fact of modern life. Part of it rests in the efforts of federal politcians to secure their electoral futures through the provision of aid to the states, part of it also rests in the federal government's wish to ensure standards across local communities, but another part rests in the efforts of the state and local governments to lobby for federal aid. These governments go to the federal government because they want to secure more benefits for their residents but without increasing the taxes they collect from these individuals. They do this because it helps local politicians. This book tells how they "apply" pressure to the federal government. Camissa does a great job of illustrating these governments secure benefits, as well illustrating how the system works for those involved.

Outstanding Reference Source

I checked this book out of our local library and was so impressed with the information provided I had to purchase. Found an excellent used copy through Amazon. If you are interested in what you are taking into your body- then you will find this Encyclopedia a very valuable tool. The author offers descriptions that include traditonal medicinal and nutritive benefits of whole foods and in addition- their relation to the Ayurvedic system of health. I found the author's personal asides and recipe suggestions a charming bonus- this New Whole Foods Encyclopedia by no means reads like a dry reference tome but more along the lines of a compendium of excellent information compiled by an old friend.

I was hoping for more information along the lines of specific nutritional content and colored photographs. A little too brief for me. It's a good general resource, but I think I prefer World's Healthiest Foods by George Mateljan.

great coverage of food by type

i like this book because it was everything i was looking for. it lists each type of produce, herb, oils and more in alphabetical order. the book is easy to navigate and Rebecca Wood is clear and concise in her descriptions. i would suggest making sure you read the intro pages first, otherwise you will confused when she describes foods in certain ways. i would definitely recommend this to others.
