The Next Best Thing to Being There

While the Harry Potter phenomenon at large is a property with almost an unlimited reach, the audience for a pricy collector set like this can only be a limited one. But when I set my eyes on it I knew I was one of those people. While not a devotee of the books, as a filmmaker I recognize the incredible scope of the work that went into each film. I bought the Harry Potter Page to Screen book immediately upon its release, figuring anything that weighed in at 531 pages would be comprehensive enough for my tastes. But to condense a decade worth of filmmaking into one tome risks merely skimming the surface of topics like costuming, props, and set design. I believe that the limited-run Collector's Edition expands upon these topics admirably (if not exactly comprehensively).

At nearly 40 pounds, the set arrived nestled in a series of cardboard boxes and was an epic unveiling, packed between black molded polystyrene bumpers like a hefty computer printer. The replica Monster Book of Monsters was the first out of the box, and is a nice collector-quality piece which seems to be made of heavy resin and fake fur, with well-done hand painted details. The numerous, tiny eyes are particularly good. The art portfolio is an incredibly sturdy piece, cloth-bound and gilded. The art they chose to print are not the most striking items seen in the vast catalog of production design generated for the film but are nice standalone items, representing a good range of subjects suitable for display, and are printed on a heavy, matte stock.

Each of the books gets a different "textbook-style" treatment in line with the series design, with attractive bindings and great quality paper and printing. Tons of spot varnish and classy presentation throughout -- though made in China like most print work these days. Most of them weigh in at 130 pages or so, with some as many as 150 pages in length. Of particular beauty is the Guide to the Graphic Arts Department, which showcases all of the incredible paper ephemera created for the series.

Is it worth the cost? When my wife heard the price, she nearly did a petrificus totalus. This is not for everyone. A wealthy Potter Completist will find an excuse to purchase it, but I would only recommend the set if you both are a Potter Fan AND a film design fan. If you are in the filmmaking and production design business, this is quite possibly a required set, as it must closely approximate being in proximity to the actual art department itself.

While most of the world is content seeing the final film product, those interested in the accumulation of detail and design that goes into the film's environments will not be disappointed by the wealth of concept work and photography that chronicles the series stunning and spot-on design work. Production designer Stuart Craig and company crafted a vast, beautiful visual world for these films, and it takes a package like this to do it justice.

Harry Potter Page to Screen -- Collector's Edition Review

[[VIDEOID:moZP23ALXWX60E]]As a big fan of the Harry Potter novels and films, I think this book this a fantastic one to own. "Page to Screen" chronicles the entire 10-year production of the Harry Potter movie franchise.

Everything about the movies is discussed -- including in-depth looks at the characters, locations, and various stories of the making of the movies. Author Bob McCabe does a great job highlighting the challenges of the production, the technical and creative innovations, and the visual/artistic achievements. I would say that my appreciation for the films increased after reading this book. In particular, the visual elements (costumes, props, set design, creature makeup, etc) of the movies are discussed in detail. It also helps that the book contains tons of high-resolution color images - including photos from the set.

For those wondering if the collector's edition set is worth owning, my answer is YES. In addition to the main book, you also get seven ancillary books. Where the "Page to Screen" book is more informational, these other books are more focused on imagery - they contain photographs, design sketches, concept art, etc.

Each book focuses on a visual aspect of the movies -- "Wizard Wear" focuses on costuming; "Movie Magic" focuses on props and visual effects; "Creature Shop Compendium" showcases the many creatures that appear in the films; and there is even "The Paintings of Hogwarts", a book dedicated to the portraits that line the halls of Hogwarts school.

One valuable bonus in the Collector's Edition set is a nice replica of the Monster Books of Monsters. It's the best-looking version of that prop that I have seen.

** This set is very expensive, but even if it is not affordable at it's current price I would encourage you to add it to your Wish List and check back often. I purchased mine for under $150 during an Amazon lightning deal, so they do put it on sale from time to time.

Best Christmas present to myself.

I got this during while the Cyber Monday type deals were going on on Amazon. I remember it clearly: Amazon gave a little snippet before the product was actually unveiled, something like "for every true Harry Potter fan." Of course, I sat at my computer and waited until the allotted time to see what it was. And when it was finally released, I jumped on it.

I won't lie, I handled each of the books with a hint of reverence; not something I'm proud of admitting, but true all the same. I don't regret buying it at all. Maybe that would be a different story if I had paid the whole $1000, but since I only paid $480 I could justify it to myself. It was totally worth it. The amount of detail is astounding, and I feel like I got a piece of the phenomenon that isn't available for everyone. The Page to Screen book in particular is already pretty in depth, but the added bonus are the others. Each of the other books has a specific focus: the sets, the costuming, etc.

Honestly I still haven't gotten all the way through the collection. I'm trying to take my time and enjoy each piece as I get to it. My loved ones are rather annoyed with me; I keep hollering out to them details about the Harry Potter universe. I don't regret the purchase at all, and I would do it again. While my allegiance is more to the books than the movies, I can't deny that I waited for the midnight showing on all of them when they were released in theaters. The amount of work that went into even the smallest of details--a wizarding advertisement during the Quidditch Cup, for example--are shown in these books, and it is magnificent.

It's a hefty price tag, but if you want to know as much as you can about the HP world, it's worth it.

About the Author
Born in Oradea, Romania, Liviut Victor Sabadus immigrated with his parents to the United States when he was nine years old. They settled in the Detroit metro area, where he has lived all his life. After receiving his high school diploma, Victor enrolled in a community college where he acquired an associates degree in Business Management. He furthered his studies at William Tyndale College, a small christian college in Farmington Hills, Michigan, obtaining a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and a Minor in Christian Studies. Even though Victor was proud of his educational accomplishments, his true passion and desire had always been to work in the film industry, producing and writing Christian movies with a deep Biblical message. In 2007, he enrolled at a local film school, Motion Picture Institute of Michigan where he underwent a rigorous one year training program learning the ins and outs of film-making, graduating in September of 2008 with a concentration in directing. In the summer of 2010, Victor worked as an Extras Casting Assistant on The Double (2011), a full-length spy film directed by Michael Brandt, and starring Richard Gere and Topher Grace. Shortly thereafter, God called him to work on the biggest, most challenging, film project he has ever undertaken in his career. This two year project culminated into the script you now see before you. One of Victor's greatest regrets is not pursuing his divine calling in the film industry when God first called him. Nevertheless, the late entry in the field has not discouraged him, but rather motivated him to become a film producing professional in less time. If God wills, Victor's desire is to take In The Shadows of Love to the big screen, either on his own, or with the help of a production studio.

If you're looking for good christian fiction, this is it!

Creative, inspiring, and entertaining...these are the words that come to mind when thinking of this book. While the book reads like a movie script, it really is quite refreshing to see something different, and it is very easy to read, trust me! In fact, it's actually really fun! You really feel like you're watching the movie when reading the book, complete with scene introductions, great dialogue, and wonderful story-telling. And what's most important, the story is truly divinely inspired! It speaks to God's plans for each and every one of us and how our plans are sometimes not his, yet in the end all works for the glory of his kingdom.

Overall, this book is a must-have for those looking for a new and exciting take on christian fiction!

What a great story!!! Wow!!!

I love Christian stories, so I was skeptical to get this book because it was an unknown author. I have to admit. The title caught my attention so I decided to give it a try. I do not regret buying this book. It was filled with emotional ups and downs all the way through the story. I was so taken by Alina's relationship with Will that I hanged on every word. I'm going to wait a few weeks and re-read the book again, cause I'm sure I missed little details reading it the first time around. Hope this review was helpful, if not, sorry, can't help you there.

A Story Inspired by God!!!

I've never read a book as a movie script, but this book was definitely worth reading. I was engaged the entire time and the surprise ending was so awesome. I was building the movie in my head scene by scene and when I finished it, it felt like I've seen this movie at the theater. I highly recommend it, especially if you like a good story with a good Christian message.

Book for School

The book is okay. The exercises in the back are a bit annoying with the made-up abbreviations. It takes me a minute to figure out what the respondent is talking about. It's one thing to use shorthand when you're actually in the room with the person describing the blots, it's another when you're not. I would've preferred to read respondent answers without the abbreviations, and then have a section discussing the importance of using shorthand in order to quickly write down the responses.

very straightforward way to learn the Rorschach

This is probably the quickest and easiest way to learn how to administer, score, and interpret the Rorschach. Exner has more detailed textbooks about his approach to the Rorschach, but I think this is the best place to start. It's what my school used when I was a doctoral student in psychology.

"Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" disappointed a number of Indy fans, perhaps surprised at the darker tone of the second film, and is generally regarded as the weakest film of what is currently a trilogy. Not so the novelisation.
Whereas the first book was a turgid and often plodding slog this second volume gets the tone absolutely spot-on. The joy of the Indiana Jones films is that they are are B-movies, big budget and carefully crafted, but essentially homages to the Saturday serials and action adventures of the thirties, and the novelisation of "Raiders" seemed to entirely miss that point, and thus failed to capture the thrills and flavour of the cinema version. It cannot be easy writing a novel based on a screenplay anyway, since there is a severe time constraint and the very real possibility that the finished movie may veer dramatically (ahem... no pun intended) from the early written version. This is certainly one reason for a few of the more disappointing scene changes in the "Raiders" novel.
"Temple," however, is much closer to the finished film, adding to it by way of thoughts and motivations for the characters but thankfully avoiding the trap of getting mired down in efforts to produce a "serious" work. James Kahn's book is slim and has rather large type when compared to the first and third novelisations, but in this case I regard that as a plus.
The pace is furious, the action as ripsnorting as you could wish and even - goodness, I can't believe I'm saying it - Short Round actually comes over as rather a good character, which is more than you can say for the film. Indeed, going back to the movie after reading this book I found that my disappointment with the second film had abated somewhat. It is still a less exciting ride than "Raiders" and not such a glorious romp as "Crusade," yet there is much to enjoy on screen and especially in this book. A pity that Mr Kahn did not pen the later original Indy novels, as they would have been vastly improved by a writer with a keen sense of what a damn good B-movie should be all about. Hats off, indeed.

YOU HAVEN'T MET AUSTRALIA TILL YOU'VE MET THIS

The old hero-story, thoughtfully retold, is always nourishing to read, but Wrightson offers us more: a first-class hero-cycle that is deeply, soul-quickeningly Australian. Wirrun is a young mid-20th-century Aboriginal man advancing to apotheosis (indeed) through encounter not only with the Aboriginal peoples of the "old south land" but also with the spirits who are themselves the land's oldest dreamings. Till I met them in Wrightson (a white Australian woman) these out-breathings of Australian presence were hidden to me. If bringing them forward in fiction like this involved a measure of cultural risk (I'm waiting on a ruling on that from the Aboriginal mate I bought this copy for), I, for one, can only be grateful. Profoundly respectful of the people whose lore constitutes so much of her material, she also loves them -- and shows it by enrolling Wirrun as a first-class member of that mighty, immemorial and global company that "climbs the rugged track to hero" on behalf of all of us, Australian or not, Aboriginal or not, man and woman alike.

Ground-breaking, but outdated

Duby's work was ground-breaking in the 1960s, but has now become outdated. That is not to say that his arguments and analyses have proven wrong or been supersceded. It is outdated simply because it has been incorporated into much more detailed and comprehensive accounts written in the last thirty years (particularly by Norman Pounds).
That does not mean that this book is not worth reading. Duby's piece still provides a unique perspective. Although the work as a whole has been incorporated into much bigger books, no one has focused on the same characteristics that he has. Duby writes wonderfully on the gift and plunder economy, the importance of the medieval world-view to economic growth, and the change in technology. Duby's work is most valuable, however, for the image it creates. Duby follows in the French tradition of writing "impressionist histories." In this way Duby gives an excellent idea of what it was like to live in the early medieval period. In many ways The Early Growth of the European Economy is the perfect companion to Marc Bloch's Feudal Society.
This book is still worth reading because of the focus it has and the impression it gives. At under three hundred pages, it is a quick read, and provides an excellent introduction to the topic.
