A bestseller in Turnbull's native Australia, this cute firsthand look at the hardships of settling into a city infamously chilly to outsiders gives a glimpse of the true nature of Parisians and daily life in their gorgeous city. Though Turnbull tells readers less about love than new life, it was in falling for a Frenchman that the journalist found herself moving to Paris, for a few months that stretched into years. The cultural relationship is challenging enough, leaving aside the more intimate personal story (though readers do learn enough about Turnbull's now husband to understand her decision to stay), and she writes of finding work, making friends, surviving dinner parties and adapting to the rhythms and pace of life with a Parisian boyfriend with humor and a developing sense of wisdom. Of the struggle to adapt to her new home in the mid-1990s, the author writes, "I've discovered a million details that matter to me-details that define me as non-French" no matter how much she tries to assimilate, while over time she grows to appreciate some perplexing aspects of French culture, as "[e]veryday incidences elevate into moments of clarity simply because they would never, ever happen in your old home," from developing her confrontational side enough to defend herself (in French) from rude remarks to receiving advice from "a terribly chic blonde who advises me to use eye-makeup remover on Maddie's [Turnbull's dog's] leaky eyes." This is an engaging, endearing view of the people and places of France.

Adult/High School-This account of a 20-plus Australian woman's adventures as she tried to adjust to Parisian ways is both insightful and funny. Having taken a year off from her job with a TV network, Turnbull moved to Paris to be with her new lover, Frederic. She found that the French weren't interested in making new friends; were unwilling to discuss their jobs, hobbies, or much of anything except the food they were eating, planning to eat, or had eaten; and they wished to socialize in mixed groups-no girls' night out for them. But Frederic, with patience and aplomb, helped her overcome these obstacles, depicted in a series of vignettes that sketch many of the fascinations and foibles of becoming "almost French." She detested visiting Frederic's family in northern France, with its rainy, cold beaches, but finally warmed to his home, and was accepted by them. The couple's marriage was almost an anticlimax after a hilarious birthday celebration for 80 at the old home. This clash of cultures is, ultimately, a love story.

Turnbull, an Australian journalist, made a life-changing decision at age 27, when she took a yearlong leave of absence to travel the world. While in Bulgaria, she met a Frenchman, whom she arranged to visit later in Paris. The visit went well (despite her doubts in the intervening months about the wisdom of her decision and her alarm at finding adult comic books upon arriving at his apartment)--so well that she moved in soon after and has been living in France ever since, ultimately marrying the man who on their first meeting described himself as "maniac." (She later understood that he meant "neat freak.") Turnbull's account of navigating another culture, learning a new language, and reinventing her professional self is a delight to read, filled with observational humor. We know she's truly integrated when she gets a small terrier (that she then spends obscene amounts of money taking to a chic dog-grooming salon) and is able to flip insults back in French to a rude customer in a patisserie. An absolutely spot on description of life in Paris as an expat.

I'm actually re-reading this book in Paris right now. A friend loaned me her copy when I went to France a few years ago.
If you'd like some insight into the French psyche then this book has it.
Sarah tells of her real life experience of meeting a Frenchman while working in Bucharest (she is Australian). Within a very short time she moves in with Frederique and is still there seven years later when she writes this book. She beautifully describes her love/ hate relationship with Paris, one of the world's most beautiful, incredible cities but often one of the most inhospitable.

If you dream of moving to France one day or just want to read about someone who took the leap then this is the book for you. Her experience is difficult yet romantic and beautiful; that's Paris for you!

Love this book

I bought this book (on paper) when it first came out. One of my best friends had lived in Paris for several years and I was fortunate to have been able to visit many times. This book gave me a small glimpse of what she went through being a stranger in a strange land. For some reason this weekend I decided I had to read it again so purchased it for my kindle. And it's still as good a book years later. Sarah is a very good writer and, perhaps, a better story teller. Her experiences are interesting and enlightening. Her sense of humor and her ability to relate the same are exquisite. I feel badly for those French women who wouldn't give her the time of day - she is the sort of person that most women would (underline) want for a friend. As mentioned, I love this book. I wish she would write a sequel as I would love to know how everything has turned out..

Sarah Turnbull is a twenty-something journalist from Australia taking some time off to backpack around Europe. She meets Frederic and goes to visit him in Paris and ends up staying.
Sarah has a lot of problems with the language, the politics and each chapter is mainly about various facets of her life in France.

Frederic does not live in Paris proper, so eventually he and Sarah buy an apartment in the city and we learn the intricacies of French real estate. When they decide to have a window put in, they have to do it on the sly to avoid all the red-tape and then pay off any neighbors that complain.

I skimmed most of the politics stuff, but I enjoyed all the food discussions and her foray into fashion journalism.

My favorite chapter was when she and Frederic decide to get a dog, Maddie. The French may be very reserved but not when it comes to their pets. Sarah finds her fellow Parisians become very talkative and interested in Maddie. I love that dogs are welcome in all the cafes, shops, and even the butcher shops. And they have lots of very fancy dog groomers that are not just for the rich but anyone that does not want to be scorned and yelled at for not taking proper care of their dogs.

This was billed as a look at love and life in France but it is much more life than love. Which is fine, no one needs another sappy, romantic memoir. I enjoyed this very much and is a great addiction for any Francophile.

This book was good. How Males Jinns! We finally get to meet several in this book. We also get to meet more of Azra's family and much more exciting things happen. This books would make a great movie if the movie is done correctly. Wow! How long has it been since a genie has been on TV. I loved "I dream of Genie"! I would love to see this series brought to the big screen!! Can't wait for another book in this series!

The gas turbine has proven to be more revolutionary

Jet engines seem simple in concept and modern in practice. Like other technologies they have been readily accomodated into our lifestyle. Constant effectively demonstrates the turbojet was not the inevitable result of prior systems but rather the culmination of a process of technological change, which required the "prior successful co-evolution of piston aero-engines and streamlined airframes."(241). The turbine, from which the turbojet evoloved, has a long history going back centuries from water turbines, to turbine pumps, steam turbines, turbo-air compressors, internal combustion gas turbines and the turbo supercharger.

This process, according to Constant, can be represented by, what he terms, a "presumptive anomaly." In his model an individual or a group of individuals assume that a conventional technology will sooner or later fail and eventually be superceded by a superior system. Usually the insight and determination for this change comes from outside the established community and is the result of a vision of the future, not the dream of the past.

The four men responsible for the turbojet are Frank Wittle in England and Hans von Ohain, Herbert Wagner, and Helmut Schelp in Germany. None of them were a part of an established engine manufacturing company, but all were aware of advancing aerodynamic technology. Each independently deduced the new performance parameters required for the turbojet. Constant cautions that, while their work was revolutionary, they worked within the norms of a Western technological culture. In other words they had to prove that their technology was in fact superior and practical. In Constant's model a "new normal technology" in aeronautics was established in 1939 when England and Germany firmly committed to develop the turbojet engine.

A tradition for technological testing was also essential in the evolution of turbine power. Constant emphasizes its importance as "clearly critical, for without it, idealized scientific theory, however correct, could have only limited impact on the design of real world systems."(56 ) The ability to measure the efficiency of turbines permitted the advancement of the most efficient designs and, in the case of the turbojet, a means to measure its effectiveness against the prevailing piston technology.

At the time of his writing, Constant's focus on turbojet power (with the revolutionary SST and Concord in mind) seems to hold up well enough, but subsequent developments weaken his argument. The turbojet has not become the new normal technology. By shear numbers and the diversity of applications, the internal combustion gas turbine has arguably proven to be more revolutionary. Compared to the raw thrust of a turbojet engine, in a turbine engine most of the power is extracted from the gas flow as shaft output prior to it being exhausted out the tail pipe. This energy is then used to power not only aircraft, but also ships and tanks. Even experimental turbine powered automobiles were tested on American highways in the early 1960s. The distinction may be at first glance appear to be slight, but turbojet engines have had only a limited application in high performance military aircraft. The gas turbine is more widely used and more fuel efficient for general applications.

Constant does a credible job of tracing the development of turbines through the turbojet. While his "presumptive anomaly" model may have applications to particular historical analyses similar to turbine development, it is too specifically focused to be of general use.

It should be read alongside Vincenti's account ('What engineers know and how they know it') of lesser and purely evolutionary developments in engineering. Constant demonstrates how revolutionary change demands the application of science by individuals of outstanding mind, insight and persistence -a stark contrast to evolutionary development, reducible to a corporate process,as described by Vincenti.
