An informative book...

I found this book to be informative and tightly thought out. I do have a philosophical issue with it in terms of the author's position that the Black Sun is our very Being. I would not go so far as to say that. It ultimately is a leap into faith to accept that this Black Sun actually exists or that there are daemons that hover just above your head but I guess it can be comforting for some people. There is plenty of good info on how to inspire your rituals toward a LHP bent. Also, the lesser Sabbat reminded me of the Jewish observance of Shabbas where the Sabbath Peace of the World to Come is experienced during this observance. Malphas suggests a type of Sabbat where the world of the Pandemonium is experienced as a foretaste of the LHP World to Come. That's a little too religious for me but overall I liked the info and found what I was looking for. Maybe you will too!

Many not be too great for those who question things

Warning: This is a biased opinion.

On the surface the author is breaking new ground with his book but the more I read his book, the more his work is questionable.

The premise of the book is about knowing that there is a black sun emanating black (uv?) rays in some parallel universe that spawns daemons. Each daemon is attributed to every human being, well according to him, there's 3 daemons attributed to the 3 parts of the self. Once this is known, then the mission of merging with ones daemon to understand his or her true will while bringing the kingdom of pandaemonium (as it were) on earth is the objective to be carried out.

There's other parts of the book that speaks of ancestral worship by having the ancestors in your life to help you/daemon complete your true will and you fix your ancestral karma or wyrd to remove any wrong doing of your families blood line.

I find that it's sort of based on Eastern Mysticism but for me, this book has many concepts that I have a hard time getting around. So then what I did was ask the author myself certain questions about his/her work in which took a while for a reply. Eventually my questions were answered with a suggestion to go to his/her ($5.00 a pop) forum if I have any future questions. I had gratefully thanked the author still feeling unsatisfied by his/her answers while wondering why should I pay money to ask "believers" about the book when I can ask the author myself (who's also on my myspace page)- I mean, isn't buying the book payment enough?

The problems that I find with the literary faction of the occult is that there are too many people out to amalgamate a grand system of many different elements when the fact is certain things based on their nature shouldn't be mixed in. -Sounds like I'm speaking about something else doesn't it?

I am not calling the author (who's anonymous) a fraud but rather his work (to me) is rather unsound. Perhaps, this would change in the future eventhough I doubt it. Nor am I bashing this book because it may be right up your alley, but the only way for you to find out is to buy a copy for yourself.

Malphas has created an interesting book. Among Classical Theurgists Daemons were that class of being, half way between humans and gods. Their mere being provided a gateway -- way for the human to transcend the laws of the here-and-now. In most traditional system some greater Being sends you a Daemon to help you out, because It thinks your goals are worthwhile or your Virtue great. They're handy entities that help the human stop being a thing that exists by type -- "What you is is what you is" and become a being that can shape his fortune both in this and other realities. Malphas reveals in simple terms that these beings are you -- an not totally awakened part of you. If you use a rational self-aware and self-enlightened philosophy -- rather than herd-supertisition other-centric false altruism -- you can be the God that grants the Daemon to you. With simple to follow practices from both traditional magic and modern philosophy, Malphas shows you how to meet the Daemon, and become the Daemon. This is a book that would have delighted Thomas Jefferson, Anton LaVey, Socrates, Heideigger and even Uncle Setnakt. Well done! The perfect Walpurgusnacht gift. A nice maunal for increasing Power, Pleasure and Knowledge.

Great field guide

A very complete and beautifully illustrated field guide to the birds of Argentina and Uruguay. It features a range map, good description of the bird and a photo and illustration of the birds. The package also included a bird checklist and dvd of bird songs for many of the bird. This is a must book for anyone going to bird in Argentina or Uruguay.

A little pricey for a bird guide but it seems to cover all 1000 birds in two languages. It has photos, drawings with habitat background, maps where found, and good short descriptions. Also a I-VI rating on the probability of seeing the bird. The back cover says "contains DVD with 900 bird sounds". The book actually contains a CD of sounds which plays on a computer.

About the Author
George Bentley, DSc, MB, ChB, ChM, FRCS, FRCSE, F.Med.Sci, is Emeritus Professor of Orthopaedics at University College London and Honorary Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital NHS Trust. For many years he was Director and Professor of Orthopaedics at the University Department of Orthopaedics, Institute of Orthopaedics, University College London, and Director of Clinical Studies at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital, London. During his long career, Professor Bentley has received numerous honours and acted as visiting professor to major institutions in the United States and elsewhere. He is a Past President of EFORT, the British Orthopaedic Research Society and the British Orthopaedic Association, and he has been President of the Seddon Society since 1991. In 1994 he became a “Membre d’Honneur” of the Société Francaise de Chirurgie Orthopédique et Traumatologique. Professor Bentley has been European Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Arthroplasty since 2001 and has been a member of and advisor to the editorial boards of many other prestigious journals. In 2009 he became an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.

Fun, sweet, uplifting

Every once in a while a frog really does turn out to be a prince. The Cinderella Princess made a believer out of me. I was all ready to not like Prince Lucas Alexander Leopold Casimir von Rexburg since royalty and billionaires who feel entitled (yes, I know that they are popular right now) are not my favorite type of male main characters. However, in Melissa McClone’s capable hands, he truly did become princely. If he had owned a cowboy hat he would have been perfect! Nick is pretty perfect, too. Dylan is definitely a real frog.

Needless to say, but I will anyway - I love this novella. Short enough to read in an evening, it is a traditional sweet romance with a few interesting twists that cause anguish for the character before the happily ever after. Included are several female characters, Emily, Addie and Maria-Therese. I would want as friends. Caring, hardworking, honest and loyal, they are more alike than different no matter their social position. It’s a fun uplifting read.

The Cinderella Princess

This was a really cute, sweet, quick read. Would I have purchased it to read based on the synopsis? Yes, I would have.

This was a shorter book and there wasn't a whole lot to the story. Don't get me wrong, you have the back story for the main characters and a little bit for the supporting characters, but there's not much drama in this book and that's probably why it didn't catch my attention too well.

But then again, the break from all the drama filled books is kind of nice. That being said, this was a sweet story. You have the bad boy who's given an ultimatum and the good girl throwing herself into her work. There's no time for anything else and no time to seek out the things that are worth it. They just exist. Until one day...

I guess I was waiting for the big shebang or that "oh-hell-here-we-go" moment that is in most books lately. It never came, and I'm ok with that. not every book has to have those moments.

I did feel like there wasn't much info on the dates from either Emily or Luc's POV to really get what was going on. I think if we were in their heads and saw more and heard more thoughts during those times, this would have been a lot better and I could understand why the feelings between the two were as deep as what they were so quickly. And again, sometimes there is no explanation for it. It just is.

This was the first book written by Melissa McClone that I have read and I will continue to read her work. Just because it's not like the rest, doesn't mean it isn't worth reading. In fact, it's why I will look for more of her stuff!

Quick read

Modern day fairytale story, where the prince is looking for his forever match via reality television.
The story is fun and entertaining. For the first time, someone, that being Emily, is giving it straight to Luc. No finesse, not what he would expect to hear, but the simple truth of the matter. The sparks are flying, the banter is constant, and as Emily and Luc get to know each other, while looking for a wife for him, Emily finds out that there's so much more into this prince than tabloids are saying. And maybe what they are saying are not true at all.
While predictable, this story is pleasant and enjoyable. It is a clean, lively, and witty romance, a look behind of making of the reality television, and the awkward situations with dysfunctional families. Perfect, quick read for the Easter holidays for the romance lovers

Teacher and screenplay doctor Truby (responsible for popular screenwriting software Blockbuster) brings his complicated but time-tested story development system to print for the first time, a 22-point process that's more thorough-"an extremely precise map of your entire plot" that "shows you the most dramatic way to tell your story"-but also more unwieldy than the traditional "three-act" technique. For example, the first seven steps Truby introduces apply to structure: develop "weakness and need" and "desire" in your hero, give him an "opponent" and a "plan" for overcoming that opponent, then throw in a "battle" that leads to "self-revelation" and, finally, a "new equilibrium." Chapters build on each other, fleshing out these steps with a number of terms and concepts (character types include hero, main opponent, ally, fake-ally opponent and fake-opponent ally) that alternate between cagey (the "character web") and confusing (the nearly indistinguishable "designing principle," "theme line" and "moral argument"). Further frustration arises in Truby's examples, old movies retrofitted with his techniques (most notably The Godfather and Tootsie) rather than a script that has actually been put through Truby's paces (or, even better, a new script invented just to demonstrate the steps). Following Truby's complex system may yield a memorable screenplay, but writers without great patience may find it more trouble than it's worth.

Best by far for novel or screen writers

I have spent a lot of money on screenwriting and novel writing books. I have had recommendations for books that were different, or foolproof; formula based, character based, plot based, etc. In my experience, the screenwriting books do it better than the novel writing ones, but it still takes some searching to find something really useful. I first used John Truby's book for a screenplay I was writing. I followed the first few chapters religiously and discovered I was solving problems I didn't even realize existed, creating deeper characters and stronger arcs all as part of the process. It wasn't formulaic and didn't give me a standard plot, but it did adhere to a few fundamental truths about story and character that cannot be ignored. As with any book, you need to use your brain and alter the rules to fit your story, but trust me, don't stray too far. It's very easy for someone to think that their character or story is "too good" or "above" the rules of conventional story telling but trust me, even the most obscure stories follow this basic format (if they are any good). It gives you relatable examples from a variety of movies, and the exercises are actually practical (none of the tired clichés such as "write about an experience you had where..." or "tell a story using these key words as a starting point"). All the exercises are specifically designed to help you develop YOUR story, not just any random plot.

Because of the success I had with this method, I used the book again for planning my novel. Now, with a novel there are a few changes that need to be made. More happens in a novel, and of course things like "the audience reveal" are generally strictly cinematic tools and don't translate well to literature. However, I found the same successes with it for novel writing. Same problems being solved, same richness added to the plot and character.

I would recommend this book to anyone writing something with plot. I bought this originally in paperback and purchased the kindle version so that I could just carry around my iPad. Use in conjunction with your favourite other texts (I like Blake Snyder's "Save the Cat" beat sheet for pacing. I cross referenced this with my favourite novels from the genre I was writing in to find the appropriate pacing for the novel).

There is no such thing as a magic book that will make you a great writer, BUT if you have skills and a great idea, this will help you workshop and develop the idea to give you something you actually start writing.

Technical To the Nth Degree

THE ANATOMY OF STORY is not for “pantsers” (writers who write without an outline). It’s an extremely technical manual for people who like to have their whole story, including every plot point, character change, motif and themeplanned out ahead of time.

I found it to be similar in many ways to Dr. Stanley D. Wiliam's treatise on the subject, THE MORAL PREMISE: Harnessing Virtue and Vice for Box Office Success.

The problem for me is, like Dr. Williams, Truby’s method strips story down to bare mechanics, bleeding all the life out of it. I found his method tedious, making things more complex than they need to be. He does show what elements all stories have in common. The problem is, he never explains how to put those elements into practice.

As an author, I'm glad I read it, but I'll probably never read it again.

22 Steps to Becoming a Master Storyteller

Bought this on the recommendation of two writing friends and my regret is that they didn't speak up sooner. I've found all of Truby's advice and guidance useful, and quickly found his 7 Key Steps to Story Structure invaluable. My only quibble is a wish that I could understand the material better. There are insights which I grasped easily, but other sections that require squinting and pondering. Not because Truby makes the information difficult, but because I thought I knew more about story structure than I actually do. The book's subtitle, 22 Steps to Becoming a Master Storyteller, should be believed. If you are interested in mastering the craft of writing, then this book should be in your library.

Specifically what other writers may find useful is Truby's explanations of: character web, identifying story challenges and problems, four-corner opposition, and placing characters' values in conflict. There's a great deal more, but those topics have benefited me the most at this time.

About the Author

Dr. Bruce M. Whitehead is a NAESP Nationally Distinguished Principal and has served for over thirty years as a principal for School District # 4 in Missoula, Montana. He also serves as an Adjunct Professor for the University of Montana. His career includes appointments to numerous national and international committees as well as becoming President of the Montana Association of Elementary School Principals and the Montana State Reading Association. He also served as Chairman of Montana’s first Governor’s Task Force on Technology as well as being an NCATE Advisor. As a co-author of 10 books and numerous articles in the field of education, Dr. Whitehead is a recipient of the University of Montana’s highest honor, The Montana Distinguished Alumni Award. Additional honors include: The International Reading Association’s Presidential Service Award, NASA Explorer Schools Leadership Award, National Milken Foundation’s Outstanding Educator Award, John F. Kennedy Center’s Award for Arts in Education, Outstanding Contributions to Saudi Arabian Education, and Japan’s International Soroban Institute Award.

Dr. Floyd Boschee has an extensive background in teaching and educational administration. He served as a teacher, coach, and school administrator in the public schools and as a professor and chairman of departments of education at the collegiate level. Dr. Boschee is professor emeritus in the Division of Educational Administration, School of Education, at the University of South Dakota and a former school board member of the Vermillion School District, Vermillion, South Dakota. During his tenure as a university professor, he consulted with school districts on reorganization; published numerous articles in major educational journals; and conducted workshops on curriculum development and implementation, the teaching and learning process, and school administrator evaluations. He is the author or coauthor of 13 books in the fields of school administration and curriculum and instruction.

Good Book

A good all-in-one reference manual (of sorts) for people interested in integrating technology into their curriculum, district, or even just their lessons. The only drawback is that, like many things tech related, portions of this book will soon be out of date. An online companion reference that could be continuously updated would have been good.

Great bone pathology book for the practicing pathologist

Great bone pathology book for the practicing pathologist! This is an outstanding text organized around basic patterns in bone pathology and radiology. There is abundant radiographic correlation and the text is generously illustrated with high quality images. Mostly focused on neoplastic bone pathology and mimics, but there are chapters on degenerative joint disease and crystal arthropathies also.

Very useful guide to bone pathology: pattern-based approach with beautiful illustrations

I still find bone pathology challenging, usually much more challenging than soft tissue pathology for a variety of reasons. The biopsies are often very small and fragmented, many of the tumors look alike, correlation with radiographs is essential, and there are so many non-neoplastic processes that are relatively subtle histologically. Even as a bone and soft tissue pathologist, I still find myself pulling out my textbooks several times per week when working up bone biopsies in my practice. Thus I need practical bone pathology textbooks with lots of high quality figures, a pattern based approach to diagnosis, and pragmatic advice on how to sort out difficult differential diagnoses. Practical Orthopedic Pathology is just such a book. Co-authors Andrea Deyrup (a former Sharon Weiss trainee like myself) and Gene Siegal (a distinguished bone pathologist at University of Alabama Birmingham) have created a fantastic comprehensive guide to the world of bone pathology. This book provides solid in depth coverage of the basics of normal bone anatomy, physiology, and radiology. I learned a plethora of fascinating factoids about how bone forms and why it looks as it does microscopically just from reading a few pages of the Normal Bone Anatomy chapter. I was also impressed by the very useful tips on proper histologic techniques for processing and cutting bone biopsy specimens. Radiology basics are also thoroughly reviewed in a practical manner accessible to the general pathologist. Discussion of imaging is tied back to the underlying pathology and there are tips for avoiding pitfalls. The heart of the book is a comprehensive text that covers the breadth of bone pathology. Rather than dividing the main text of the book into chapters based on specific entity names (e.g. – osteosarcoma, giant cell tumor, fibrous dysplasia), this book is organized into sections based on the major histologic pattern coupled with the radiographic pattern. Examples include: “Lesions characterized by osteoid deposition and non-aggressive radiology”, “Lesions characterized by cartilage deposition and aggressive radiology”, “Lesions characterized by large numbers of giant cells replacing trabecular bone”, etc. Specific entities are then discussed within those pattern-based sections. Useful tables discussing each of these patterns, the entities included in each pattern group, and pertinent histologic and radiographic mimics, are laid out at the very beginning of the book. It is a brilliant, practical approach to organizing a bone pathology textbook. One may not know the name of the entity just by looking at the slide, but if there are numerous giant cells replacing the trabecular bone, then it is clear which chapter is appropriate. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the entire book is richly illustrated with beautiful high-quality color images of gross and microscopic pathology, as well as numerous black and white radiographic images.
