A MUST for Andy Warhol Fans!

This is an awesome book for Andy Warhol fans and collectors! I bought this used, and the quality was good. A little musty smelling, but I figure that's from the age of the book. Fast shipping, which was perfect for the Christmas holidays! Bought this for my 16 yr old son, who is a big fan of pop art and Andy Warhol. :)

A Fast Method for Revising Good Writing into Great Writing

Years ago, I attended a weekend workshop for instructors of college composition that was led by Professor Richard Lanham, author of Revising Prose , visiting from UCLA, and Professor Joseph Williams, author of Style: Lessons in Clarity and Grace , visiting from the University of Chicago. They presented witty and lucid summaries of their books, Lanham focusing on revising at the sentence level and Williams on paragraphs. Although their books have gone through several editions since, the core concepts remain the same. Both self-teaching books are on my amazon Listmania's list "Expository Writing: Top Ten Books."

In the preface to "Revising Prose (5th edition)" Lanham notes: "Writing may have been invented to keep bureaucratic accounts....As the world has become bureaucratized, so has its language....Revising Prose was written as a supplementary text for any course that requires writing. Because it addresses a single discrete style, "Revising Prose" can be rule-based to a degree that prose analysis rarely permits. This set of rules -- the Paramedic Method --in turn allows the book to be self-teaching."

In each of the five editions of "Revising Prose," Lanham added fresh examples and exercises to its core content: the Paramedic Method comprising eight steps as follows.

1. Circle the prepositions;
2. Circle the "is" forms;
3. Find the action;
4. Put this action in a simple (not compound) active verb;
5. Start fast - no slow windups;
6. Read the passage aloud with emphasis and feeling;
7. Write out each sentence on a blank screen or sheet of paper and mark off its basic rhythmic units with a "/";
8. Mark off sentence length with a "/."

Basically, Lanham's Paramedic Method advises you to delete prepositional phrases and "is" forms and replace them with active verbs.

Below are four brief examples and a test-yourself exercise from the book.

Original sentence: "Physical satisfaction is the most obvious of the consequences of premarital sex."
Revision: "Premarital sex satisfies!Obviously!" (page 3).
Instead of 12 words, 4. Lanham labels this achieved concision as the "Lard Factor." It's computed as the number of words in the original sentence minus the number of words in the revised sentence, divided by the original number of words. Here, the Lard Factor is: 12 minus 4, divided by 12 equals 0.66 or 66 percent.

Original sentence: "Perception is the process of extracting information from stimulation emanating from objects, places, and events in the world around us."
Revision: "Perception extracts information from the outside world" (page 8).
Instead of 21 words, 7. The original sentence has five prepositions, the revision just one -- preposition deletion ratio of 5 to 1. Lard Factor computes to 66 percent.

Original: "In light of the pervasive problem of overcrowding at UC Lone Pine, providing another coffee house on campus would offer the university's growing population some kind of compensatory convenience."
Revision: "Overcrowded UC Lone Pine needs another coffee house" (page 70).
Lard Factor: 75 percent

Original: "Hypertext was invented to facilitate the process of navigating through a presentation of interrelated topics." Revision: "Hypertext was invented to navigate through interrelated topics" (page 72).
Lard Factor: 55 percent

In this complete book, Lanham provides 35 exercises for the readers to try on their own. I'll pick one at random.

Exercise 14: Original: "The manner in which behavior first shown in a conflict situation may become fixed so that it persists after the conflict has passed is then discussed" (page 154).
My revision: Next, discussion proceeds to behavior persistence after conflict.
Instead of 26 words, 8.
Lard Factor: 70 percent.
If the original sentence comes from one or more authors, I'd revise it: Next, I/we discuss behavior persistence after conflict.
Lard Factor: 73 percent.
or: Next, I/we discuss post-conflict behavior persistence.
Lard Factor: 80 percent.
Try it. You'd probably do better than my quick efforts.

In "Revising Prose," his witty and blessedly brief book, Lanham gifts a five-star jewel to all expository writers.

Richard Lanham's also appears in a less expensive version Longman Guide to Revising Prose that reprints the 134-page main text. The excluded 30 pages comprise a brief glossary of grammatical terms and 35 exercises for the reader.)

Since the 35 exercises in the complete book do not present the author's solutions anyway, I suggest an easy procedure to make either version self-teaching as follows.

First, read the book through -- it won't take long; it's slim.
Second, note down on an index card each example of the flabby sentences in the main text that includes the author's solution.
Third, do each of these examples on your own and compare your solution with the author's.

The Book of One Issue

Revising Prose is a one-issue book. It teaches how to avoid sentences with long prepositional phrase strings, so phrases like
“The history of the new regulatory provisions is that there is generally an immediate resistance to them”
become
“People usually resist new regulations.”
(5th edition, p. 5).

As interesting as it is, that’s basically it. The book then goes the next 150 pages giving examples after examples of the same type of issues. To make his life easier, he creates the most outrageously verbose phrases only to correct it immediately below. But his point is well taken.

Here and there the book makes other comments too, some more interesting than others. But this book is very limited if your objective is to learn writing style or how to revise prose.

The first 4 chapters (up to p. 67), repetitive as they are, are the only ones worth reading. Chapters 5 and 6 on business and professional prose are only a repetition of the repetition. I couldn’t bring myself to read all examples so I skimmed the text. Chapter 7 proposes the use of colors and movement of the fonts in computers, which disqualify the chapter for serious writers. Chapter 8 is unintelligible philosophical mumbo jumbo.

Better and more complete books on style are (1) Williams and Bizup, Style: Lessons in Clarity and Grace, (2) Zinsser, On Writing Well, and of course (3) Strunk and White.

Did I say that at $47.00 the 166-page book is indecently expensive?

The book is good at what it does, but this would be a wonderful 30-page article. As a book on style or revising prose, it gets 3 stars, but I give 2 because it's so outrageously expensive.

Decent, but could be much better

Professor Lanham correctly finds the problem with the Official Style people pick up as they go through school and their jobs. They write noun-heavy, passive sentences that pile up prepositional phrases on each other. Having diagnosed the problem, though, his Paramedic Method for solving it worships at the altar of his Lard Factor, the ratio of his revised sentence to the original sentence length. Since he only deals at the sentence level, he rewrites each gargantuan sentence into exactly one smaller sentence, and this is where he goes wrong and often loses the meaning of the original sentence.

For instance, he takes this sentence:

Pelicans may also be vulnerable to direct oiling, but the lack of mortality data despite numerous spills in areas frequented by the species suggests that it practices avoidance.

And turns it into:

Pelicans seem to avoid oil spills by avoiding the oil.

Even by his own method, this sentence is far too long. It could just be:

Pelicans seem to avoid oil spills.

But, he goes on to ask immediately after "Have I left out anything essential?" He at least asks the question, but he doesn't answer it. This is where he fails. A good reviser retains meaning and has to ask himself what the original sentence actually asserts. Lanham is distracted by turning one sentence into one shorter sentence that his Paramedic Method doesn't stop to consider if one sentence should turn into two or more sentences. Assertions, the very reason we communicate, should be the priority.

In the Pelican example, there are several assertions:

* There is no mortality data
* There are numerous oil spills in the area
* Someone thinks pelicans might be vulnerable to direct oiling (as opposed to shipping?)
* The oil doesn't seem to affect pelicans
* Someone (who?) guesses the pelicans just avoid the oil

In Lanham's revision, he only conveys the last assertion, which is not only the least interesting one, but the least supported one. Most of the original sentence is about someone's conjecture about the problem and its effect. The qualifications are necessary to let the reader judge the information correctly. The revision removes that completely. A better, but longer, revision might be:

We think pelicans are vulnerable to oil spills, but we haven't found many dead pelicans among the numerous oil spills. Maybe they avoid the spills.

I find the proper analysis also lacking from his discussion of the active voice, where he might use an active verb but doesn't choose the right actor. That sentence is not about pelicans. It's about someone drawing conclusions about pelicans. Even in Lanham's own writing, the passive voice is common and misguided.

He's quite proud of "skotison", the word he uses to describe inflated prose, and uses an example of Alexander Pope's translation of a poem into plain english. Pope's satire isn't the basis for an editorial philosophy though, as it loses almost all intended meaning just as Lanham's pelican example does. Poems don't exist to codify a series of actions. Instead, they try to describe perception and feeling, using imagery as best it can. Simply saying "shut the door" does not do that. It's cold, sterile, and utterly boring.

As such, if you are not a writer or an editor, this is a decent enough book to start your revisioning education for your own material. However, it's not a good enough guide to become even a decent editor. There's too much that the Paramedic Method ignores.

Good reference

This is a good book, however I think the Fitzpatrick dermatology book (I have 5th ed.) is organized better for a non dermatologist. If you use both and cross reference, this book has much more information. I have learned some new things from this book. It is worth looking into. It also has more pictures.

Highly Recommended for all future test-takers

Compared to many other CS review books available today, this book is unique in many ways: it is an easy read, no fluffiness, not too lengthy, you can highlight and add your own personal notes as needed, and most importantly, the book is rich enough in information necessary for the exam. I also appreciate the fact that it is well-organized into sections (system by system) which proves helpful in taking focused history and physical exam with confidence.

The sections in the book also have matching videos online (paid subscription required) to follow alongside (future CS takers who need extra boost may find them helpful as well; the author also coaches test takers one-on-one and monitors their progress). The handbook also shares some tips on patient note (PN) taking/writing, counseling, diagnostic work up, sample PNs, etc etc. So far, I enjoy reading the book and I will update my review when the test is completed with its final outcome. And I'm quite optimistic with the way my preparation is going. Much thanks to the author.

All I can say for now is that I Highly recommend this book.

Fantastic study resource for the USMLE Step 2 CS!

I wish I had read your book earlier; I bought the Kindle version about 3 days before my exam. (I had seen Dr. June's very helpful videos on Youtube, and it compelled me to try out the manual).
The way this handbook is laid out is very helpful in the study process; neither the First Aid or Uworld had lay outs like this!
I also joined Dr. June's online free webinar in which she explained the process of studying for this exam and how to excel.
Buy this handbook early on in your studying time; it will greatly help you-- there are specific explanations to WHY you have to do each physical exam maneuver, ask specific questions in order to help you rule in/out differentials in your mind. There are great examples and explanations in writing out the Patient Note. The manual gave me a lot of reassurance in my knowledge; it was a perfect wrap-up of other study materials all in one organized place :) Keep practicing & good luck to you all!

The best CS review book out there. Don't waste your time with anything else. If you want to pass the exam this book along with online course and personal coaching by the author is a must. Do it once do it right with Target USMLE. This book goes hand in hand with the online course. The beauty of the book is short clear and concise, it's only 73 pages. So you can review and go through it many times before your exam. If you do the course with the personal coaching all you need is about 2-3 weeks prep. Target USMLE is a must all Medical grads for the exam specially the IMG's. The beauty of the book is Dr. June puts it very clear pattern in a step by step pattern. It's like reading a recipe book, actually the online course the book and personal coaching all put together is recipe for success. If you want to pass this exam on the first attempt get this book asap. I don't what I would have done without this book, online course and personal coaching. Target USMLE was the key to my success.

The Next Best Thing to Being There

While the Harry Potter phenomenon at large is a property with almost an unlimited reach, the audience for a pricy collector set like this can only be a limited one. But when I set my eyes on it I knew I was one of those people. While not a devotee of the books, as a filmmaker I recognize the incredible scope of the work that went into each film. I bought the Harry Potter Page to Screen book immediately upon its release, figuring anything that weighed in at 531 pages would be comprehensive enough for my tastes. But to condense a decade worth of filmmaking into one tome risks merely skimming the surface of topics like costuming, props, and set design. I believe that the limited-run Collector's Edition expands upon these topics admirably (if not exactly comprehensively).

At nearly 40 pounds, the set arrived nestled in a series of cardboard boxes and was an epic unveiling, packed between black molded polystyrene bumpers like a hefty computer printer. The replica Monster Book of Monsters was the first out of the box, and is a nice collector-quality piece which seems to be made of heavy resin and fake fur, with well-done hand painted details. The numerous, tiny eyes are particularly good. The art portfolio is an incredibly sturdy piece, cloth-bound and gilded. The art they chose to print are not the most striking items seen in the vast catalog of production design generated for the film but are nice standalone items, representing a good range of subjects suitable for display, and are printed on a heavy, matte stock.

Each of the books gets a different "textbook-style" treatment in line with the series design, with attractive bindings and great quality paper and printing. Tons of spot varnish and classy presentation throughout -- though made in China like most print work these days. Most of them weigh in at 130 pages or so, with some as many as 150 pages in length. Of particular beauty is the Guide to the Graphic Arts Department, which showcases all of the incredible paper ephemera created for the series.

Is it worth the cost? When my wife heard the price, she nearly did a petrificus totalus. This is not for everyone. A wealthy Potter Completist will find an excuse to purchase it, but I would only recommend the set if you both are a Potter Fan AND a film design fan. If you are in the filmmaking and production design business, this is quite possibly a required set, as it must closely approximate being in proximity to the actual art department itself.

While most of the world is content seeing the final film product, those interested in the accumulation of detail and design that goes into the film's environments will not be disappointed by the wealth of concept work and photography that chronicles the series stunning and spot-on design work. Production designer Stuart Craig and company crafted a vast, beautiful visual world for these films, and it takes a package like this to do it justice.

Harry Potter Page to Screen -- Collector's Edition Review

[[VIDEOID:moZP23ALXWX60E]]As a big fan of the Harry Potter novels and films, I think this book this a fantastic one to own. "Page to Screen" chronicles the entire 10-year production of the Harry Potter movie franchise.

Everything about the movies is discussed -- including in-depth looks at the characters, locations, and various stories of the making of the movies. Author Bob McCabe does a great job highlighting the challenges of the production, the technical and creative innovations, and the visual/artistic achievements. I would say that my appreciation for the films increased after reading this book. In particular, the visual elements (costumes, props, set design, creature makeup, etc) of the movies are discussed in detail. It also helps that the book contains tons of high-resolution color images - including photos from the set.

For those wondering if the collector's edition set is worth owning, my answer is YES. In addition to the main book, you also get seven ancillary books. Where the "Page to Screen" book is more informational, these other books are more focused on imagery - they contain photographs, design sketches, concept art, etc.

Each book focuses on a visual aspect of the movies -- "Wizard Wear" focuses on costuming; "Movie Magic" focuses on props and visual effects; "Creature Shop Compendium" showcases the many creatures that appear in the films; and there is even "The Paintings of Hogwarts", a book dedicated to the portraits that line the halls of Hogwarts school.

One valuable bonus in the Collector's Edition set is a nice replica of the Monster Books of Monsters. It's the best-looking version of that prop that I have seen.

** This set is very expensive, but even if it is not affordable at it's current price I would encourage you to add it to your Wish List and check back often. I purchased mine for under $150 during an Amazon lightning deal, so they do put it on sale from time to time.

Best Christmas present to myself.

I got this during while the Cyber Monday type deals were going on on Amazon. I remember it clearly: Amazon gave a little snippet before the product was actually unveiled, something like "for every true Harry Potter fan." Of course, I sat at my computer and waited until the allotted time to see what it was. And when it was finally released, I jumped on it.

I won't lie, I handled each of the books with a hint of reverence; not something I'm proud of admitting, but true all the same. I don't regret buying it at all. Maybe that would be a different story if I had paid the whole $1000, but since I only paid $480 I could justify it to myself. It was totally worth it. The amount of detail is astounding, and I feel like I got a piece of the phenomenon that isn't available for everyone. The Page to Screen book in particular is already pretty in depth, but the added bonus are the others. Each of the other books has a specific focus: the sets, the costuming, etc.

Honestly I still haven't gotten all the way through the collection. I'm trying to take my time and enjoy each piece as I get to it. My loved ones are rather annoyed with me; I keep hollering out to them details about the Harry Potter universe. I don't regret the purchase at all, and I would do it again. While my allegiance is more to the books than the movies, I can't deny that I waited for the midnight showing on all of them when they were released in theaters. The amount of work that went into even the smallest of details--a wizarding advertisement during the Quidditch Cup, for example--are shown in these books, and it is magnificent.

It's a hefty price tag, but if you want to know as much as you can about the HP world, it's worth it.

About the Author
Born in Oradea, Romania, Liviut Victor Sabadus immigrated with his parents to the United States when he was nine years old. They settled in the Detroit metro area, where he has lived all his life. After receiving his high school diploma, Victor enrolled in a community college where he acquired an associates degree in Business Management. He furthered his studies at William Tyndale College, a small christian college in Farmington Hills, Michigan, obtaining a Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration and a Minor in Christian Studies. Even though Victor was proud of his educational accomplishments, his true passion and desire had always been to work in the film industry, producing and writing Christian movies with a deep Biblical message. In 2007, he enrolled at a local film school, Motion Picture Institute of Michigan where he underwent a rigorous one year training program learning the ins and outs of film-making, graduating in September of 2008 with a concentration in directing. In the summer of 2010, Victor worked as an Extras Casting Assistant on The Double (2011), a full-length spy film directed by Michael Brandt, and starring Richard Gere and Topher Grace. Shortly thereafter, God called him to work on the biggest, most challenging, film project he has ever undertaken in his career. This two year project culminated into the script you now see before you. One of Victor's greatest regrets is not pursuing his divine calling in the film industry when God first called him. Nevertheless, the late entry in the field has not discouraged him, but rather motivated him to become a film producing professional in less time. If God wills, Victor's desire is to take In The Shadows of Love to the big screen, either on his own, or with the help of a production studio.

If you're looking for good christian fiction, this is it!

Creative, inspiring, and entertaining...these are the words that come to mind when thinking of this book. While the book reads like a movie script, it really is quite refreshing to see something different, and it is very easy to read, trust me! In fact, it's actually really fun! You really feel like you're watching the movie when reading the book, complete with scene introductions, great dialogue, and wonderful story-telling. And what's most important, the story is truly divinely inspired! It speaks to God's plans for each and every one of us and how our plans are sometimes not his, yet in the end all works for the glory of his kingdom.

Overall, this book is a must-have for those looking for a new and exciting take on christian fiction!

What a great story!!! Wow!!!

I love Christian stories, so I was skeptical to get this book because it was an unknown author. I have to admit. The title caught my attention so I decided to give it a try. I do not regret buying this book. It was filled with emotional ups and downs all the way through the story. I was so taken by Alina's relationship with Will that I hanged on every word. I'm going to wait a few weeks and re-read the book again, cause I'm sure I missed little details reading it the first time around. Hope this review was helpful, if not, sorry, can't help you there.

A Story Inspired by God!!!

I've never read a book as a movie script, but this book was definitely worth reading. I was engaged the entire time and the surprise ending was so awesome. I was building the movie in my head scene by scene and when I finished it, it felt like I've seen this movie at the theater. I highly recommend it, especially if you like a good story with a good Christian message.
