Avoid.
By pamela wolfert
A book full of half-baked thoughts, cherry picked information, and the general tone of the uneducated pretending to be far more intelligent than they actually are.

This book claims to be about toxic, hateful nerds but the only one of those I see is it's author.

By Noah Dexter
I came across this book and purchased it out of pure curiosity. I am currently majoring in Psychology at UPenn and occasionally play video games in what little spare time I have. I figured heck why not, it's cheap and already has good reviews. It was an eye opener for sure. I never really gave a good thought as to why people behave the way they do in multiplayer gaming. Thank you Mr. Hinkley.

A new approach to career discovery
By Jeff Johannigman
I have been a career counselor for almost fifteen years now, and my shelves are filled with everything from "What Color is Your Parachute?" to "Do What You Are" to "I Could Do Anything If I Only Knew What It Was". Until recently, I felt that most every career exploration book was retreading the same ground, connecting your skills, values, and interests in a linear way to matching job titles. Or, at the other extreme, telling you to just think happy metaphysical thoughts to change the universe and manifest prosperity.

Then I read "You Majored in What?" - and I was blown away by a radically new approach to career exploration, based on Chaos Theory and what the author calls "Wise Wandering". It takes into account the fact that nobody follows a linear path to a lifelong career that fits perfectly. Instead, it leverages the seemingly random events in your life to provide clues to your attractors.

Thank you, Dr. Brooks, for giving me a new set of tools to use with my clients. It's opened me up to new approaches, and reminded me that, as Tolkien said, "Not all those who wander are lost."

Refreshing & inspiring
By Lucia Cassia Silvana
Having just been fired from my new job, I was despondently wandering around the public library looking at books in the career and job-hunting section. I picked up a few, but, as is always the case, they were dry & uninspired, didn't apply to me or my situation as much as I'd hoped, and, frankly, made me feel even more despondent. Then I came across "You Majored in WHAT?" in the new books section. I resonated with the question as I'm a double-major in English and Philosophy with a minor in Anthropology ... living in an area where having a college degree has gotten me kicked out of more interviews than I can count (you don't need a degree to use a cash register or fry a burger). I thought it might be a book that was sympathetic to my situation (over-educated in an undereducated town) and would, at least, entertain me for an hour. I was wrong! It was so refreshing, positive, interesting, and inspiring that I actually got tears in my eyes. It gave me hope that somehow, somewhere, someday I'll be working in a job - a career - that makes use of my mind, my education, my talents and my interests. It's okay that, since my graduation, I've been wandering, trying to figure out where I belong and what I should/could be doing. It told me that my way of thinking has NOT been wrong these past few years - I'm allowed to try different things, I'm allowed to be confused, I'm allowed to still be figuring out what I want. Best of all, it showed me that there are others out there like me, those who are wondering what to do with their chosen majors, if it was all worth it, if everything will work out in the long run. This book is long, long overdue and so needed. A breath of fresh air in the all-too-stale world of work. This is a book that I will purchase and refer to again and again when the chips are down, and will recommend to many.

The Female American or, The Adventures of Unca Eliza Winkfield (Broadview Literary Texts), by Unca Eliza Winkfield

When it first appeared in 1767, The Female American was called a "sort of second Robinson Crusoe; full of wonders." Indeed, The Female American is an adventure novel about an English protagonist shipwrecked on a deserted isle, where survival requires both individual ingenuity and careful negotiations with visiting local Indians. But what most distinguishes Winkfield's novel is her protagonist, a woman who is of mixed race. Though the era's popular novels typically featured women in the confining contexts of the home and the bourgeois marriage market, Winkfield's novel portrays an autonomous and mobile heroine living alone in the wilds of the New World, independently interacting with both Native Americans and visiting Europeans. Moreover, The Female American is one of the earliest novelistic efforts to articulate an American identity, and more specifically to investigate what that identity might promise for women. Along with discussion of authorship issues, the Broadview edition contains excerpts from English and American source texts. This is the only edition available.

Review
"Graced by an uncommonly interesting as well as learned introduction, this edition of the virtually unknown novel, The Female American, will invigorate any collection of colonial American literature. Indeed, its obscurity up to now is surprising, for it seems as central to the modes and issues of colonial fiction as such now-standard works as Susanna Rowson's Charlotte Temple: A Tale of Truth or Hannah Foster's The Coquette." (Myra Jehlen )

"The Female American is a fascinating Robinsoniad ...an original blend of predecessor narratives by Behn, Defoe, and Penelope Aubin." (John Richetti )

"This adeptly edited, page-turner of a novel is a fascinating descendant of Robinson Crusoe and an important example of the kinds of cross-Atlantic fiction being written to explore issues of colonialism, race, gender, nationhood, and human rights in the decade before the American Revolution. In contrast to Smollett's Humphry Clinker and Brooke's The History of Emily Montague, The Female American dares to give us a bi-racial heroine, a nuanced portrait of American Indians who can ask whites 'Had you no lands of your own?' and a startling exploration of religious imperialism." (Paula Backscheider ) --Paula Backscheider

From the Publisher
The Broadview Literary Texts series is an effort to represent the ever-changing canon of literature in English by bringing together texts long regarded as classics with valuable, though lesser-known literature.

What a woman!
By Patto
She's the fictional granddaughter of an actual historical character, Edward Winkfield, first president of the Virginia Colony.

She's also the daughter of a Native American princess. Her father married the Indian maid who saved his life during a massacre.

She can shoot a bird on the wing with bow and arrow, truer than any man she knows. But she also has a classic European education and knows Greek and Latin.

Unca Eliza Winkfield is a marvelous heroine, and she almost had me convinced that her farfetched adventures were true. The author follows the eighteenth century convention of presenting fiction as fact, to avoid charges of corrupting women readers with improper tales.

Unca Eliza is rich and outfits a ship to take her to England after her father's death. Her wealth gives the captain the idea of marrying her to his son. When she refuses, he leaves her on an uninhabited New World island.

There are Robinson-Crusoe-like elements in the plot, but the story is quite different. The pious heroine, rather than shunning the natives who visit her island, decides to convert them!

The Female American was first published in London in 1767. Contemporary critics found it "disagreeable" and "preposterous." A young woman of mixed race with Unca Eliza's courage and leadership skills was not the role model society wanted for women.

I find it interesting that the novel was re-published in Vermont in 1814, and here I am in Vermont reading it with relish almost two hundred years later!

No one has succeeded in determining the identity, gender or nationality of the author, as you'll find out in the scholarly introduction. I suggest you read this after the novel because it does reveal the plot.

Eighteenth-century novels can be hard to warm up to, but I loved this one.

Not much I admire about Unca Eliza Winkfield
By K. Gilligan
This was one of the texts I had to read for a class, and having never heard of it (except in reference to Robinson Crusoe), I had high hopes for it. Sadly, I did not enjoy it. To me, aspects of the story are so utterly ridiculous that it must be a satire. If it is a satire, then kudos to the author... but then again, if it is a satire, then nobody else seems to get it, and therefore it doesn't succeed in its goal. To me, it reads as religious intolerance.

First off, you have a wealthy, educated (and multilingual), biracial, female heroine. Absolutely unheard of at the time, and not something that readers would have been able to take seriously. Her birth only happens because her Pagan mother was converted to Christianity by her father, and Unca Eliza shrugs off much of her mother's culture to embrace Christianity. She keeps her archery ability, but gets rid of her mother's religion.

She refuses marriage with the reason that her husband must be able to use a bow and arrow better than she. An admirable stance, but unrealistic. I expect that a woman would have only been able to refuse marriage if she were wealthy, so I guess it is lucky that Unca Eliza is.

When Unca Eliza ends up on an island--the most obvious indication that this is a Robinsonade--she encounters a hermit who leaves her basically a how-to book on how to survive the island and warns her of the natives. She doesn't really figure anything out for herself. Later Unca Eliza seeks out the natives and is greatly impressed by their temple, tools, jewelry, and a giant idol which allows someone standing inside to see out of it for miles and miles. She is so impressed that she decides she must immediately convert these people. Sure they have obvious intelligence as displayed through their metal-working and architecture, but they need to be converted to Christianity because they don't know any better??

And how does she accomplish this conversion? Why through fear, trickery, and hypocrisy. She is quick to condemn these people because of their idolatry, but is also quick to use it for herself. She uses their own technology against them, pretending to be, essentially, a god in order to SCARE them into gaining their trust. She flat out threatens to destroy them. Basically she believes herself superior to them because of her religion and believes she must do whatever it takes to convert them.

And eventually she does end up getting married, despite her previous stance, so what might have been her one redeemable quality is now gone.

If anything, this story is a huge example of religious intolerance, and there's nothing I enjoy about that. If it's a satire, then it's an argument against religious imperialism... but so few seem to see that side, and therefore it fails to have the impact it should.

From Publishers Weekly
"The British author of the Hitchhiker trilogy and other immensely popular lunacies, Adams permits no whiff of common sense to spoil his new novel, which combines fantasy, hilarity and creeping horrors," remarked PW . Here, sleuth Dirk Gently investigates a lawyer and an advertiser who possess the soul of the god Odin. "The plot's ramifications are marvelous, bloody and irresistible."

Hitchhiker's Guide to Reality
By Erik Meltzer
This book, and its predecessor "Dirk Gently's Holistic Detective Agency", are heavily under-rated due to the major success of the Hitch Hiker "trilogy" by Douglas Adams. But in a way, they're the better ones. Especially this one.
I won't bother telling the story, because frankly I cannot. Now, I've been reading this book in about monthly intervals for years, but I still find something new each time, and I still have trouble keeping track of the story. Don't let that keep you, though. Yes, it *is* mildly confusing, but it all works out after a couple of times of reading, and it's great fun from first time, page one. Besides, it's worth the effort: there's many a topic for an evening of thinking in there.
But that's not what you buy it for.
Then there's the business of the Norse Gods walking the Earth, just like your average John Smith. Sort of. Thor naturally makes more of a nuisance of himself, but anyway, the notion of everything that the human race ever chose to believe in being true, and staying true long after we've ceased to need it to be true as well, is an astonishingly moving one. "Immortals was what you wanted, and immortals was what you got", complains one of them bitterly. And rightly so. What would you do if you were an immortal, omnipotent being whom no-one believes in anymore? Chances are, you'd sell your immortal soul to appear in a soft-drink commercial. Once you accept the fantasy part of it, it all snaps in place with logical precision, and even going to Asgard becomes an accepted way to spend the evening.
But that's also not what you buy it for.
The most outstandingly entertaining thing about the book is, of course, the humour, which is more like what you buy it for. Douglas Adams is an expert for making a pun in a couple of words and leave you laughing longer, and louder, than many other humourists could in an entire page. The incredible lightness of it all is only apparent if you ever tried to write humourous stuff yourself, and thus know how hard that is. No wonder that there are so precious few books from this author. And no wonder that many try to emulate him, and fail.
Still, this isn't entirely comedy, and that's a good thing, too. Yes, the Hitch Hiker books give a couple of insights into Life, the Universe and Everything as well -- but the Gently books give more of it, and more practically applicable examples of it, even to those of you who know where their towels are.
One of my favourite examples is the way that one of the (mortal) key characters, Kate Schechter, explains how her name is spelled: "Two E's, two C's, two H's, and also a T, an R and an S. Provided they're all there, the bank won't be fuzzy about the order they come in -- they never seem to know themselves." Okay, it's funny, but there's more to it than that: it's the kind of humour you can only really understand with a name like hers -- or mine --, which makes me wonder how someone with an instantly spellable name like Douglas Adams, of all people, found out about it.
All in all, this is everything you could want: Hugely entertaining, but in an intelligent way, and not boring however many times you take to it. A must-have-read!

Adams' best so far?
By A Customer
Most people seem to prefer the more obvious slapstick of the early Hitchhiker's books, but I've found myself enjoying Adams more and more as he's matured. Many of the situations in this book are outrageous and silly, and there are plenty of the one-liners that are Adams' trademark ("It can hardly be a coincidence that no language on earth has ever produced the expression 'As pretty as an airport,'" the book begins) but there are very few passages intended solely for the purpose of eliciting a laugh. Everything's integral to the story, and it all makes sense in the end, although Adams doesn't hand you the answer on a silver platter. This novel is part social commentary, part Rubik's Cube (how DO those piecses fit together, anyway?), and part humor. It took me several re-readings to get the bit about the concentric circles on the eagle's wings, but it was worth it. If you enjoy exercising your mind through the contemplation of the absurd, you'll enjoy reading -- and re-reading -- "The Long Dark Tea-Time of the Soul."

This is Adam's greatest work. This book alone has all the elements that has made him one of my favorite writers. If you've finished the Galaxy series and want more, don't pass this one up. I've never truly enjoyed reading a book until I read this one.

Recommended for Indiana Jones fans
By Journey Myers
This book contains the entire "script" for Raiders of the Lost Ark, though it is obviously not the original screenplay as it contains elements that were not thought of until filming had begun (e.g.-Indy shooting the Arab swordsman). It would have been nice to have the text of the shooting script to see the difference between it and the final cut, but no such luck. Still, being an Indiana Jones fan, it's nice to have it if only for reference purposes. There's an introduction by director Steven Spielberg himself that is pleasant without being revelatory, but again it is nice to have. The main draw of this book are the copious amounts of storyboards it contains. Crowding every page are drawings that show how the filmmakers had it all mapped out in their heads before cameras rolled. The storyboards are culled from various points during the production and it's interesting to see how the artists interpreted characters and locations. Particularly intriguing are Joe Johnston's special effects storyboards, which break down the complex visual wizardry of the film's arresting finale. The book itself is pleasing in appearance (if you can track down a good copy), with Richard Amsel's poster art handsomely rendered on the front and some full color storyboard examples on the back. On the whole, I would recommend this to Indiana Jones nuts as it makes a nice complement to the film.

READ it for Yourself
By Nikolai V. Rudd
For ALL those people, like me, who absolutely LOVE this film. Reading the script and seeing all the illustrations and storyboards for sequences and costumes, gives the fan a chance to "Really" get into how the imagery was developed. But this is one that Everyone should read for themselves.
