A Reference Librarian's Pick as the Funniest Kid's Book in Years

I must admit that I didn't know about Geronimo Stilton. I guess I haven't been paying attention.

While checking out some excellent children's books recently, my favorite reference librarian asked me if I was taking them out for my grandchildren. After telling her that I don't have grandchildren (but do have grand dogs and cats . . . and a grand nephew), I explained that I sometimes review outstanding children's books. She immediately whooped and said, "I've got just the book for you. We've all been reading it today and can't stop laughing." Before I could say another word, she raced off to the children's books and brought back Geronimo and the Gold Medal Mystery. I'm very grateful she did. The book is quite a treasure.

If you are ignorant about the series (as I was), this is the 33rd entry in the series. Geronimo is the editor of The Rodent's Gazette (New Mouse City's most widely read newspaper) while his sister, Thea, is a special correspondent at the Gazette. Grandfather William Shortpaws is the founder of the Gazette, and Geronimo jumps when Grandfather Shortpaws calls. Unfortunately for Geronimo, Thea wants to take a pass on covering the Athens Olympics for the Gazette and Geronimo is pressed into duty, despite his utter lack of knowledge about sports.

In the story, Geronimo gets some unexpected help from his old friend, Hercule Poirat, who is investigating the athletes from Mousylvania. The two of them discover some big surprises behind some stunning athletic performances.

The story is filled with jokes that tykesters and tykestresses will enjoy, many of which are visual humor based on the abundant, vivid, full color illustrations. My book actually had a post-it note in it with a comment in a child's handwriting that one illustration reminded the child of the trouble he or she gets into when she or he doesn't pay attention.

Remarkably, interspaced within the story are lots of sidebars that provide useful information about the Olympics, Greece, and various athletes who have competed successful in the Olympics. These sidebars contain much more information than most nonfiction books aimed at this age group (4-6 if read to and older if read by) do.

The typography is especially interesting. Words are installed in shapes that capture and accentuate their meaning. For example, "roar" is in red bold print with little lines running through it to imitate sound waves. "Quiet" by comparison is in thin-lined blue hand script. I can just imagine a youngster goggling over the composition methods and laughing a lot! It's also a good way for beginning readers to learn some vocabulary.

At the back of the book you find lots of humorous drawings of the Gazette office, New Mouse City, and Mouse Island. "About the Author" is written as though Geronimo Stilton is the actual author.

Seldom has tongue in cheek been so much fun for youngster and their elders.

Here are reviews written by my second grade class. Obviously they enjoyed the book!

Geronimo and the Gold Medal Mystery is about a person named Hercule who loves bananas and they taste like melted cheese. I love this book because it is funny and good for learning about Olympics if you know what I mean. This is good for 7, 8 & 9 year olds and thank you for choosing this book.

Interesting Ethnography

Purchased this book for an anthropology class. It was one of the better books that I've read this last quarter, if not my career as a student. On the other hand, if you are not interested in different cultures, there is nothing wrong with that, then you will not like this book. It is best to read this book with an open mind and try your best not to be ethnocentric. Meaning that certain topics of the book are taboo in our culture, but it is accepted in their culture. According to this book, the !Kung from Botswana live a very interesting and different [to our own] lives. Majorie Shostak did a great job writing this ethnography, and really capturing the voice of "Nisa". Recommended for the person who likes traveling to learn and understand culture.

people should forget the bible and read this book

i loved 'nisa'. i've read a lot of books in my life - in four different languages, all kinds of topics, in recent years mostly scientific ones. with this i mean to say, it was not easy for 'nisa' to break into top five of all the books for me.
but it happened.
'nisa' changes the way you feel like a women: about men, about raising childrean, about life in general.
'nisa' puts things in a different perspective. in the perspective in which we have spent 99% of our time on earth, so i think it is OK if i call it 'right perspective'. thank you marjorie shostak, i am sad that you died, but hope your book and your scientific papers will live forever.

Nisa Talks and Still Keeps Her Secrets

Nisa talks a great deal, but somehow the inner life of the !Kung is never revealed. A trance state is referred to throughout the book, but what does it feel like when one is "trancing"? One dies and goes to some indeterminate place "up there"? I realize it is impossible for a European to live like a !Kung among the !Kung because of the wide economic disparities and the tradition of gift exchange (among the many problems the author acknowledges right from the start of the book) but a deeper look into their interior life would have been welcomed.
Despite Nisa's stilted language, which may be the fault of the translator, there is much to learn here.

This book came into existence because there did not seem to be any single book that would be adequate as a text for courses on hearing aids or that could advise practicing clinicians on all aspects of hearing aids.

I have aimed to make the book both practically useful and theoretically sound. Issues are explained rather then described. Wherever possible, practical recommendations are based on empirical research, and where there is no research to draw upon, the tentative nature of the recommendation or conclusion is indicated. Readers who already know the field well will notice that the book contains some data and clinical procedures that are published for the first time, as well as hopefully some new insights and perspectives into older issues.

The book is designed to be read on a number of levels. For readers who need only an overview of a topic, the synopsis at the beginning of each chapter should suffice. Most readers will hopefully be enticed to read further; the essential information on each topic is marked with a shaded bar in the margin. These marked paragraphs are designed to be read, and to be understandable, without the intervening paragraphs. I think of the marked material as a thin book buried inside this thick book. Some academic courses may wish to restrict themselves to just this material, which includes approximately half the book. The remaining material provides a greater level of detail. Finally, the most detailed comments are tucked away as footnotes and as sections in small print. The material at all levels is further segmented by presenting the most theoretical material and the most practical material in the form of self-contained panels. These two types of panels are differentiated by their appearance and by the panel titles.

Excellent book, but Kindle/e-book needs proof reading

I need this book for a course requirement for my Au.D. program, and this textbook makes the course make a lot more sense than the notes from the instructor!
My only complaint with the e-book/kindle format is that there are quite a few typos, or words that are joined together. This is just one of the typos that I have noticed in the kindle version of the book. I do not know if this is also in the physical book, or just file for the kindle version, but I would highly recommend that it be proofread. If it did not have these errors, I would have given the book a 5

If you are a HIS or dispensing audiologist who loves the "geeky" side to hearing aids this book will make your day. If not, you'll have to work through it slowly and perhaps learn more than you ever cared to know about physics.

great book covering many aspects of hearing aids

I'm just an interested amateur, but this books covers lots of areas in some depth regarding the technology and fitting of hearing aids. It would be nice to see a little more mathematical/engineering approach, but this book seems to be aimed at audiologists, and is well suited for that use.

Prof. Toliyat is currently a Raytheon Company endowed professor of electrical and computer engineering at Texas A&M University. He has received several awards, including the prestigious Cyrill Veinott Award in Electromechanical Energy Conversion from the IEEE Power Engineering Society (2004), the Patent and Innovation Award from Texas A&M University System Office of Technology Commercialization (2007), the TEES Faculty Fellow Award (2006), the Texas A&M Select Young Investigator Award (1999), and the Space Act Award from NASA (1999). He has also received four prize paper awards from the IEEE. Prof. Toliyat has published more than 370 technical papers (including more than 110 in IEEE Transactions) and has 12 issued and pending U.S. patents.

GEORGE B. CLARK served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1944 to 1947, the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952, and spent several years in the reserves for both services. Now retired, he was formerly Director of Research Administration and Research Technology Transfer at the University of Massachusetts Medical Center in Worcester, Massachusetts. His other publications include Devil Dogs: Fighting Marines of World War I (1999).

An Examination of Love

I think a lot of the online reviewers of this book don't realize that this book is not about the relationship of Fermina and Florentino. The book is about love in all of its forms, and the characters in the book exist as vehicles to examine the strangest and most powerful of all human emotions. Love in the Time of Cholera is about: unrequited love (Florentino for Fermina); marital love (Fermina and Juvenal); platonic love (Florentino and Leona); angry love (Florentino and the poet who makes him so furious); jealous love (the adulterous wife killed because of her affair with Florentino); young love (Florentino and Fermina in the beginning); dangerous love (the mental patient and Florentino); adulterous love (Juvenal and his affair, Florentino and many of his women); love from afar (Florentino and Fermina); elderly love (Florentino and Fermina, Fermina and Juvenal; the cyanide suicide); May-December love (Florentino and his ward); the relationship between sex, age, society, art, death and love (pretty much the whole book).
I could go on, but you get the idea. Any attempt to read this book as the story of Florentino and Fermina misses the point. The book is still very enjoyable that way, but look beyond the surface and enjoy Marquez' ruminations on that thing called love that drives us all crazy.
Incidentally, I think it's one of the best books ever written.

THE MANY ASPECTS OF LOVE

Love in the Time of Cholera takes place circa 1880-1930 in an unnamed Caribbean seaport city. The three main characters form a triangle of love, with the hypotneuse being the quintessential romantic, Florentino Ariza, a man whose life is dedicated to love in all its aspects.
As a young apprentice telegrapher, Florentino Ariza falls hopelessly in love with the haughty teenager, Fermina Daza. Although the two barely meet, they manage to carry on a passionate affair via letters and telegrams, until one day, Fermina Daza, realizing that Florentino Ariza is more "shadow than substance," rejects him and marries the wealthy dandy, Dr. Juvenal Urbino instead.
Florentino Ariza, who has sworn to love Fermina Daza forever, is, of course, stricken to the core, but Fermina's marriage is nothing he can't handle. As one century closes and another begins, Florentino Ariza rises through the ranks of the River Company of the Caribbean and sets off on a series of 622 erotic adventures, both "long term liaisons and countless fleeting adventures," all of which he chronicled and all the while nurturing a fervent belief that his ultimate destiny was with Fermina Daza.
Fifty-one years, nine months and four days after Fermina's wedding, on Pentecost Sunday, fate intervenes and Fermina becomes a free woman once again when Dr. Juvenal Urbino dies attempting to retrieve his wayward parrot from a mango tree. Seeing his chance at last, Florentino Ariza visits Fermina Daza after the funeral and declares, "I have waited for this opportunity for more than half a century, to repeat to you once again my vow of eternal fidelity and everlasting love." Fermina's reaction is not quite what Florentino was hoping for. She orders him out of the house with the words, "And don't show your face again for the years of life that are left to you...I hope there are very few of them."
Fermina Daza, however, hasn't quite gotten Florentino Ariza out of her system and the story ends, symbolically, with a river journey into eternity.
It's hard to believe that Gabriel Garcia Marquez has written a book that is better than One Hundred Years of Solitude, but with Love in the Time of Cholera, he has done just that. Not quite magical realism, it is still magic of the highest order and it is pure Garcia Marquez. An exquisite writer, Garcia Marquez tells his tales with passion, control and unblinking humor with just the right amount of the fabulous woven in.
Unlike some of his slightly claustrophobic works, this novel has an almost epic quality and Garcia Marquez handles the shifts in time and character perfectly; from the opening lines you know you're in the hands of a master. The book is flawless: Not one word is out of place, not one sentence is awkward. Lesser authors might slip into the maudlin when writing an entire book on the many aspects of love, but Garcia Marquez never gives us less than crystalline insight into what it really means to live, to love and to live a life of love. The last chapter alone is a masterpiece no one who's loved, or loved and lost, will ever forget.
As the book closes, we sail down the river with Garcia Marquez at the helm, safe in the knowledge that he is a navigator of the highest order, one who can pilot the river of love unerringly. He certainly does just that in this shining, sometimes funny and always uplifting book of flawless perfection.

Beautifully written, but problematic.

This is a difficult book for me to review, because there are two factors at work here that for me are at very much at odds.

On the one hand, Love in the Time of Cholera is a beautifully written book, rich with imagery and emotive language. This is all the more impressive when you consider how difficult it must be to translate any work from one language to another and still manage to evoke the feelings that the original author intended, and for that I must give high praise to Edith Grossman, the translator for the English edition that I read.

On the other hand, there is a very real difficulty in sympathizing with Florentino Ariza, the protagonist of the novel. In his youth, he courts Fermina Daza, the daughter of a wealthy businessman from a poor family who is obsessed with social climbing. Because her father disapproves of Ariza (a poor boy who would not improve his family's social standing), their relationship consists almost entirely of love letters sent back and forth. After a long while, though, Fermina finally rejects him. Later she marries Juvenal Urbino, a doctor and a member of one of the most respected families in the city, and has a relatively happy marriage. Florentino, however, never gets over her, and continues to desire her from afar, even after fifty years, and when her husband dies, Ariza is ready to pick things right back up from where they left off.

Here is where the novel falls apart for me, though: I can believe a man could be so hopelessly in love with a woman that he obsesses over her for the rest of his life. However, Florentino's actions do not befit a lovelorn man pining for his sweetheart. Over the course of his life he has sexual relationships with literally hundreds of women, many of them married. After one woman is murdered by her husband after he discovers her unfaithfulness -- due to Ariza writing on her stomach with some body paint -- Ariza's only concern seems to be the fear that the husband will find out who his cuckolder is and come after him. At one point he rapes one of his servants and, when she gets pregnant, compels one of her suitors to marry her. In his old age, he is made guardian of a 14-year-old girl who is described as a "blood relative", and almost immediately begins an affair with her, which ultimately results in her suicide.

Even the things he does with relation to Fermina are questionable. He hangs around her neighborhood constantly, hoping to catch a glimpse of her. He attends balls and ceremonies and celebrations for no other reason than that he knows she'll be there. He writes daily letters to her for months while receiving no reply. He calls her on the telephone just to listen to her answer, saying nothing until she hangs up. These are more the actions of a stalker than a suitor.

And the most outrageous part of all this is that, in the end, he gets the girl. What lesson is the reader supposed to take from this? That being a womanizing, cuckolding, creepy-ass stalker who dabbles in rape and pederasty will win the heart of your one true love?

(Incidentally, Fermina knows absolutely nothing of any of his sexual shenanigans. Florentino even has the gall to tell her he's a virgin at the age of 76, though she's not stupid enough to believe it.)

While the story is interesting and well-told, this dissonance regarding the protagonist left me somewhat at a loss. In the end, my score is more for the richness of the prose than anything else.

About the Author
Karen Wilken Braun is an associate professor for the Weatherhead School of Management
at Case Western Reserve University. Professor Braun was on the faculty of the
J.M. Tull School of Accounting at the University of Georgia before her appointment at
Case Western. She has received several student-nominated Outstanding Teacher of the
Year awards at both business schools.

Professor Braun has been a Certified Public Accountant since 1985 and holds membership
in the American Accounting Association (AAA), the Institute of Management
Accountants, and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She also holds
the Chartered Global Management Accountant designation, and is a member of the
AAA’s Management Accounting Section as well as the Teaching, Learning and Curriculum
Section. Her research and teaching interests revolve around lean operations,
sustainability, corporate responsibility, and accounting education. Dr. Braun’s work has
been published in Contemporary Accounting Research, Issues in Accounting Education,
and Journal of Accounting Education.

Dr. Braun received her Ph.D. from the University of Connecticut, where she was an
AICPA Doctoral Fellow, a Deloitte & Touche Doctoral Fellow, and an AAA Doctoral
Consortium Fellow. She received her B.A., summa cum laude, from Luther College,
where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. Dr. Braun gained public accounting experience
while working at Arthur Andersen & Co. and accumulated additional business
and management accounting experience as a corporate controller.


Wendy M. Tietz is an associate professor for the Department of Accounting in the
College of Business Administration at Kent State University, where she has taught since
2000. Prior to Kent State University, she was on the faculty at the University of Akron.
She teaches in a variety of formats, including large sections, small sections, and webbased
sections. She has received numerous college and university teaching awards while
at Kent State University. Most recently she was named the Beta Gamma Sigma Professor
of the Year for the College of Business Administration at Kent State University.
Dr. Tietz is a Certified Public Accountant, a Certified Management Accountant,
and a Chartered Global Management Accountant. She is a member of the American Accounting
Association (AAA), the Institute of Management Accountants and the American
Institute of Certified Public Accountants. She has published in Issues in Accounting
Education, Accounting Education: An International Journal, and Journal of Accounting
& Public Policy. She regularly presents at AAA regional and national meetings. She
also leads a short-term Study Abroad trip for accounting majors to Paris and London
each year.

Dr. Tietz received her Ph.D. from Kent State University. She received both her
M.B.A. and B.S.A. from the University of Akron. She worked in industry for several
years, both as a controller for a financial institution and as the operations manager and
controller for a recycled plastics manufacturer.

Dr. Tietz and her husband, Russ, have two grown sons. In her spare time, she enjoys
bike riding, walking, and reading. She is also very interested in using technology
in education.
