The second edition of this book is completely reedited making the book even more valuable for graduate students, reflecting recent advances and adding insightful new material.

The book is about the analysis of regional economic performance and change, and how analysis integrates with strategies for local and regional economic development policy and planning. First, the book provides the reader with an overview of key theoretical and conceptual contexts within which the economic development process takes place. However, the deliberate emphasis is to provide the reader with an account of quantitative and qualitative approaches to regional economic analysis and of old and new strategic frameworks for formulating regional economic development planning.

The second edition brings to the present its original thesis about the need for regions to be fast and flexible, but also to be proactive in order to be prepared to experience increasingly greater shocks while having less time to adjust their economic development to achieve sustainability. This is underscored by events that have occurred since 2001: 9/11 terrorist attacks, continuing rapid advances in technology, the rise China and India, the Tsunami, and all the known on-going and unforeseen risks and challenges that confront nations around the globe and the regions and localities within them. The book presents strategies and the traditional and expanded methods used to create and implement them.

Bloodline, The Araya Story, my review.

The book opens peacefully enough, " It was a warm February morning in Whittier, California... ". .... Suddenly , you are teleported to early Feb. 2002, a very private moment, frozen in time for the Arayas. A moment, where this story begins.

The life of Mr. Javier Araya is told by his daughter Jeanette, the second of 7 children, as she felt to honor her father's and the Araya family legacy. Jeanette chronicles her father's beginnings, the early years in Chile, the middle years in suburban Los Angeles, and Maywood, to the latter years in Moreno Valley California. She details the success and challenges of a man trying to raise his family of seven children with his wife outside his native land of Chile. She recounts his inner struggles to find peace with God, the Catholic Church, the outside pressures and influences of heavy metal music, and it's demonic overtures on his family and mainly his son Tom Araya.

The book is not about the band Slayer, but Jeanette does go into the early Slayer years and the iconic success of the band including her brother Tom's accession into the band's lead singer status.

She briefly introduces you to her siblings. You will enjoy uniquely amusing accounts of the Araya family throughout the book. Time before the Internet , video games, cell and wireless phones. You'll be particularly interested in Tom 's birthday gifts to his father. But you will also be privy to some very serious moments of turmoil and grief.

In summary, I really enjoyed the book. I opened the cover and couldn't put it down, read it in one sitting . The 122 pages are flowing and well written... an excellent read. You get a sense , a true prospective of what growing up "Araya" was. Jeanette should be very proud of her father, family, and this book.

Laney, Book 1 of The Brookhaven Series by Joann I. Martin is a young adult vampir novel that exceeds any expectation for young adult novels today. The main character Laney is a wonderful representation of what it would be like to today's world if a nineteen year old met a cute boy in class and he happened to be a vampire, or at least in our dreams. The setting in in the real world, a small college campus, and the events that take place are easily ones that readers can picture themselves in.

The author makes her book so enjoyable because she makes her books relative in today's world. There is a scene where Laney, Oliver, Carter, and Kiera is watching a movie- Twilight and Oliver looks to Laney and asks if she likes vampires. It's a creative way of Sowles bringing her world to the real world of today.

The story was very fast paced and full of mystery and adventure. Eveything that was done or said was relating to that next clue or piece of the puzzle. The author left you wanting more at the end with many questions such as, "Is the head of the coven her father?", "What is Laney", " Why is Kiera getting dizzy?", and "Why did Laney not tell Oliver about her "dream?"

I can't wait for the next book. I have burnt out on young adult novels but once I began reading and entering her world I couldn't put it down. This book is great for the Twilight fans that have grown older and like stories much like Vampire Diaries. I highly recommed this book.

pretty good after the first third of the book.....

before things get way more interesting, the book was just a complete dud, and a copy of twilight, even to the specific adjectives sm uses in twilight. soooo much copy cat phrases and words, and nothing really happening, it really felt like a waste, and i was ready to give it up and go to the next book i'd bought. but, after a third of the book is over, it picks up quite a bit. there are some very interesting twists that are, thank goodness, different from twilight, that made it worth continuing with the reading. i would read the sequel, it's got some fairly good stuff going on, in terms of unanswered plot twists, alot of questions still when the book is over. i would recommend reading "a discovery of witches", not a ya book, but far more interesting, and not at all like twilight.

Fantastic Book!

Laney is the first book in the Brookehaven Vampire Series. I loved!

The characters in this book are enjoyable, a mixture of paranormal creatures, an evil character, but seriously EVIL. I hate him.

In the beginning, the love affair is tender, but at the same time, that kind of chemistry between the couple, which keeps you sighing and praying more. I really liked the relationship between them was developed gradually and not overnight. Oliver is in love with Laney and is not afraid to show it, that's incredible.

I want to see more of Laney's friends in the next book, because I have many doubts about them. I also need to check if what I think of Laney and his father is true.

Mrs. Sowles wrote a beautiful story filled with unforgettable characters and charismatic. A story filled with action, love and new things about vampires, creating a different world and completely charming. This is undoubtedly the best YA vampire book that I've read this year. Strongly recommended.

Carving Miniature Duck Decoys

The book is a large sized book primarily designed to give minimal instructions for carving decoys of common ducks. This is NOT a "how to whittle" book by any means. The writer assumes that you know how to use a carving knife already. The pages are of rather heavy paper that can be cut out or the staples removed so that you can use them to make your own patterns to carve the birds. Which is fairly standard for many books of this type. I used a photocopyer to copy the patterns so that I did not destroy the book ( I have a phobia about destroying books! Too many readings of Ferenheit 451 as a child I guess) I started by carving a Mallard and a wood duck. The Mallard took only a few hours of whittling with my X-Acto to get to reasonable completion level. The scale is about right for hand sized carving. A pocket knife or X-acto is perfect. The only place the book "fails" for me is in the design of the coloration of the birds. I know little about wild birds and would like some bettter guidance in this respect, though he has included two paces of color plates of completed carvings and suggests that the reader research the birds in other books. Not a bad idea at that. If you are interested in carving, this is a pretty good way to start in with miniature decoys. For the more mercinary of you, in my travels last week, I saw a slightly larger decoy in a store priced at $125. Where's my carving knife?

Good book if you've carved a duck before.

This book is a good book only if you've carved a duck before because it does not tell you what kind of knife to use, also it does not tell you to draw the basic front and back of the duck on the botton as guide lines. If you want to start carving buy the book "How to carve wood". It tells you how to carve a antique duck very clear. It also tells you what tools you need, and even how to sharpen them. After you purchase the book how to carve wood, then buy this book carving miniature duck decoys for patterns, and better techniues. Even though carving minauture duck decoys has good techniques it does not explain basic info. Buy the standard B bo-t handcrafted knife from woodcraft.com that is the best knife for basic carving. Within one week had two miniatures completed. I thought the scale was a bit small so I had the images enlarged 15% and redid the measurements. Will probably do both sizes. Better be able to carve and paint in order to take advantage of this book.

Jane Tagaki-Little is a struggling documentary filmmaker who is overjoyed to get a steady gig producing a Japanese television show, My American Wife, sponsored by BEEF-EX, a lobby group for the meat industry. As she travels through the Midwest looking for guest hosts for the show--" wholesome" housewives who embody American values and make mouthwatering recipes (e.g., beef fudge!)--she gets an eye-opening look at the meat industry and their unwholesome practices. Using the TV show to launch a subversive attack, Jane's next and most popular segment features vegetarian lesbians. Meanwhile, the wife of the Japanese rep for the show dutifully watches the program, but what she learns from the American families presented is that she does not have to settle for a brutal, loveless marriage. Ozeki's first novel has some fine touches, including a pleasing prose style, the feisty, independent protagonist, and her modern relationship with her attractive musician boyfriend. However, in striving for complexity, Ozeki overloads her narrative with too many issues (e.g., fertility, wife battering), and her intermittent diatribes on cattle ranching bring her story to a screeching halt. Ozeki is no Upton Sinclair, but since our new national pastime appears to be bashing the meat industry (move over, Oprah), this quirky novel will no doubt find an audience. such a great beginning, only to deteriorate into ground beef

It is quite rare for me to be so completely enthralled and delighted by the 17th page of a book, and one from a debut novelist to boot. Which is why my disappointment at the appallingly bad last half of the book is so acute.
First, if I had to rate the first half on creativity, humor, style, etc. I would surely give this book FIVE stars. Ozeki is a beautiful writer, the phrases and descriptions are exquisite and delightful.The humor sharp, acerbic. In particular, the depiction of cultural clashes between the Japanese crew in America was extremely funny and well-done. Much insight, real honesty and real verisimilitude. And the segments on American families--beautiful, glorious, heartwarming.
But what happened?! As I moved toward the end, my grief was palpable: I cringed. I wailed. I wanted desparately to go back to the beginning. For me, everything went downhill after the silly relationship with Sloane. The main character Jane, who WAS so brash, funny and aggressive, starts to become wimpy, wishy-washy and clueless in the arms of Sloane. Should she have the baby or not? Should she commit to this guy or not? It became a case study of post-feminist angst and it tired pretty quickly.
Secondly, what happened to all those three-dimensional characters? While I agree with the author's views on the beef industry, the characters came off as fake, superficial and cliche. Evil cattle rancher. Busty, young stripper-wife of cattle rancher. Evil wife-beating Japanese man. Timid Japanese housewife. She pits heroic, "good" stock characters against the "bad" cardboard villains of the beef industry. For e.g., the quiet. principled truck driver Dave who points out all the evils of the slaughterhouse seemed less like a solid character and more like a convenient plot device to get the anti-beef lecturing across. Akiko and John start off as delightful characters who also disintegrate into a syrupy soap opera cliche. Ultimately, Ozeki insults our intelligence by not letting us make our own decisions and does an injustice to the characters she originally created; the effect is as jarring and disturbing as a cattle prod.
That was the main problem of this novel. It started off as cynical and witty, but couldn't escape from sentimentality and a need for self-righteous closure. Bunny, Rose, the lesbian couple, etc. all cram themselves in to fit into a plotline that is more ideological rant than art. Ozeki backs off from her challenging narrative to give us a nice, fake bow at the end--somuch like TV! Despite the "hard-hitting documentary" style she professes, Jane (and Ozeki) are really just ... for the "happy ending." That means constructing a villain (the beef industry) at the expense of a good story. Even the graphic violence and bloodiness of the beef industry she tried to gruesomely convey, is all just conveniently part of a sugary-syrupy plot in the end. After Jane loses her baby, reunites with her lover, comesto terms with her Japanese mother, I felt like throwing this book into the offal and refuse of the cows she was describing--BUT not because it was bad! In fact, the first half could be described as 'brilliant'. But because this book let me down so much. That is an even bigger betrayal to me than to have written a bad book from the start. What could have been a promising debut has deteriorated into the plot of a soap opera with an ultimately dissatisfying ending.

Much more than just meat

I, too, greatly enjoyed My Year of Meats. Though the "meat" side of the novel was impossible to miss -- it is, obviously, crucial to the plot -- I found that it had very little to do with what made the book so enjoyable. I'd seen the book around in bookstores for years, but never bought it because I thought that I had the meat industry covered, having read Upton Sinclair's The Jungle. Don't make the same mistake I made! My Year of Meats is SO much more. Jane Takagi-Little is a documentarian who accepts an offer to make a series of half-hour shows for Japanese television entitled "My American Wife!" and sponsored by the American beef industry. She takes the opportunity to do more than simply showcase beef, repeatedly breaking orders from Japan and filming the most unusual and intriguing "American Wives" she can find -- a couple in Louisiana who have adopted Asian children, and even vegeterian lesbians! In the process, Jane learns a lot about the beef industry, and begins to plan to subversively expose the shocking details meat-eaters would rather not know. Unlike some other reviewers, I didn't find this part of the novel to be excessively preachy; it fit in with the plot nicely. Along the way, the reader also learns about Jane's private life and what makes her tick, fleshing out her character nicely.
On the other side of the globe we have Akiko Ueno, the wife of one of Jane's bosses. Through her eyes the reader is able to learn much about the Japanese culture. Akiko is abused by her husband, who she was set up with by her boss and married out of obedience. Eventually the lives of Jane and Akiko intertwine with fascinating end to the novel. Set to exquisite sections of The Pillow Book, My Year of Meats is a captivating read.

Funny! But ultimately too self-indulgent.

I stayed up late to finish this book, and have heartily recommended it to friends. But I do have to give a mixed review.
First and foremost, it was one of the funniest books I've read in a long time. At one point, I started laughing out loud (to my horror -- I was reading on the subway and no doubt looked like an idiot). I also thought the literary device of uniting the Japanese and U.S. portions of the story through those great faxed memos was clever. The whole thing just felt fresh and creative. Simply put, I really enjoyed reading this.
On the other hand, however, by the end of the book the development of the story and the characters had pretty much given way to heavy-handed moralizing about the meat industry, or at least the author's perception of the industry, which I suspect may be a bit exaggerated. Perhaps exaggeration is the primary flaw here. The characters were exaggerated to an extent that caused me to distrust the author and discount her perspective. And did we really have to be bludgeoned quite so hard with the Wal-Mart as Evil Empire theme? Finally, I thought that the way all the diverse characters and episodes tied together into a big happy ending was unduly contrived.
Despite these points, my final impression is that it was a gripping, worthwhile, and memorable read, and I will be watching for Ms. Ozeki's next book.

Better than tax, this book is good

The first ten chapters are somewhat boring due to it being mostly about guidance on what auditors should know, and how they should behave. There are chapters on Risk management, IT, internal controls, etc. In the last 5 chapters it covers the actual assurance engagement; plan, perform, and communicate. The whole book is necessary though to understand how internal auditing works. I liked the book because I feel like I learned something useful that can be applied in the work environment, like training.

The book met my expectations. The only down side was that I paid more than double to land it this side of the world (Zimbawe). The total cost came to $330 and thats not small change.

Yet unlike many of his pop peers, Bay Area-based Thiebaud wasn't interested in poking fun at the establishment. He's a painter's painter, a real traditionalist. Wayne Thiebaud: A Paintings Retrospective covers a career of rendering still lifes, cityscapes, landscapes, and the figure. His cake paintings are formally beautiful in their color, shadow, and composition. They are perfect specimens of the good life in America, the paint lovingly applied in places like thick frosting. His cityscapes of San Francisco fiercely exaggerate the hilly landscape, capturing a perspective from the ground and air simultaneously while utilizing the light that the Bay Area is famous for.

"He is an American painter, someone who paints for a living and whose subject, for all its formal perfection, is what we are to make of American abundance," writes New Yorker art critic Gopnik in his long, in-jokey introductory essay to Thiebaud's oeuvre now touring the country as a retrospective. As Gopnik makes clear, Thiebaud is famous for his lush early '60s paintings of cakes, other sweets and people eating them, but this book and the exhibition it documentsAput together by chief curator Nash of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, who also provides an essayAreveal the painter to be preoccupied with a larger slice of American life. The impossible perspectives and multigraded blues and yellows of the cityscapes here seem more bizarrely true to San Francisco than stills from Vertigo. Heavy Traffic, Deli Bowls, Tie Rack and Rabbit are just what they say they are, yet their surfaces coax us into looking at them harder and longer than such banal objects could possibly entice on their own. Such dressings-up themselves are commonplace in media-saturated American life, and Thiebaud redirects their energy unerringly throughout the 160 illustrations here, most in color. One might wish for a less insidery guide to the work than Gopnik's, but the panache of his biographical prose carries readers right into the paintings, well and comprehensively selected by Nash, whose own essay provides welcome detail on Thiebaud's working life.

Gorgeous

I've loved Wayne Thiebaud ever since I was a kid, leafing through my dad's art books - and now that I bake so much I have an even deeper fondness for the crisp cake and pastry paintings. This book covers a wide range of Thiebaud's work, from food to portraits to landscapes (especially my favorites, the vertigo-inspiring San Francisco hills!), and all are reproduced in beautiful crisp prints. The book is big enough to give you clear images but not so big that it won't fit on a bookshelf.

The narrative throughout is also well written, if you can ever bring yourself to read rather than just dreamily flipping through the images.

If you're a Thiebaud fan, I suggest you get this book, I doubt you'll be disappointed!

Great Artist, Great Book, Perfect for a Collection

Thiebaud is one of my favourite artists, and I wanted to add a book of his work to my collection. I was looking for one that had lots of high quality, colour pictures, and this is the perfect one! It not only has the amazing pictures I was looking for, but a great biography, as well. The biography takes up about 1/3 of the book, and the rest is pictures of his work. It's a large book perfect for a coffee table. I was impressed by all the pictures, and the great colour. I would suggest this to any artist, or art admirer!

Enlightening!

I own lots of art books, but this is already one of my favorites. I stare and stare at these pictures and marvel at what he has done. The painting is so simple at first glance, and so much more complex and fascinating the longer I look. If you are a painter, there is very much to be learned from these paintings. The phrase "paint lovingly applied" in the editorial review is most apt--and as a result, one loves looking at it. This man is really a PAINTER, an artist who revives one's faith in painting here at the turn of a century that has seen more than its share of charlatans and feeble talents. Everything he paints looks profoundly delicious, and the landscapes and cityscapes from the 80's and 90's are like thrilling dreams. The book is a revelation!
