I bought this for my class, and to be honest I have wondered while reading it, how true these stories are. Good examples I suppose in order to prepare me for being a special ed teacher, just seems a little watered down at times, or clearly biased in some way.

Summarizes Text Analytics Well

This book explains text analytics from a high level. There are a decent number of techniques explaining ways of looking at text. Throughout the book are mentions of different tools you can use ranging from free to enterprise level tools.

There are also a number of graphs in the book showing the output of results from text analytic tools. I would have like to see more "practical" examples though of how a business should be using these tools. I understand from the book the techniques we have now are not sufficient in many cases.

Some of the pictures in the book appeared to be totally random and held little relevance to text. I was wondering why the author placed them there.

The writing style is pretty informal which works well for this book. Overall this book is a great place to start for learning about text analytics. If your looking for more advanced cases, or business applications you may need to look elsewhere.

Explains Text Analytics in simple english

As a Voice of customer and Text analytics practitioner I have a little bit of background in this field and I found the book really helpful in explaining the text analytics field from a practical point of view .
Most of the concepts which may usually be too math oriented or hard to understand are explained in general English. I specially like the chapter on Bayesian analysis which had eluded me as a tool so far but the book does a good job in explaining the use and power of the algorithm.
Text is everywhere and aggregating and analyzing text remains one of the most valuable frontier for Enterprise Software and for general public alike.

I like it a lot

Steven Struhl has an incredible knack for demystifying complex analyses and analytic software, and making it accessible to those who are interested in what it does without delving too deeply into the incomprehensible elements of how it works.

In his new book, Dr. Struhl takes on text analytics. I found the chapter on Bayes Nets particularly useful. In it he show, quite convincingly that, in some cases, they do a much better job with text than other predictive methods. He provides a story through crystal-clear examples that are immediately interesting and easy to follow.

Literally, the Book on Contracts

Professor Murray has written here a definitive and comprehensive treatise on Contracts. It pairs very well with his textbook, the pair of which were plainly meant to be read in tandem. However, unlike other authors on contracts, Murray provides clarity on what the law is first, and then addresses what he understands to be problems with it.

It is very readable for a law text, and there is a sense of playfulness and lightness which make it among the more pleasant books on law that I have thus far read. (Admittedly not overmuch, I've just started school.)

If you use the other Murray Contracts textbook, this is an extremely useful add-on to have. It clarifies issues the text leaves confusing, and at least in our class was sometimes word for word what the professor would lecture. Super helpful!!!!

A wonderful read

Wonderful read (something you would take to the beach with you especially for those hot summer holidays in a tropical climate) Set in Angola, Brazil and Portugal during the close of the Portuguese slave trade the book takes the form of corrispondance letters first of all from a middle class Portuguese liberal who arrives in Angola and falls in love with a local African woman and finaly from the lady herself.

Its a lovely read, wonderfully describing Angola during the 19th century the sights, the sounds the mixed culture both African and European. The author is also wise not to make things out too idealistic concerning the conditions of both native freedmen and slaves while being keen to describe how the Angolan capital had become a racial melting pot.

It would be unfair to give away too much of the story as this is a short book (about 150 pages) and you will probably have it finnished in a day but it is without doubt worth reading.

Epistolary novel, written mainly by one Fradique Mendes, an 'aristocrat and adventurer' who has sailed out from his native Lisbon to Angola in 1868. In letters for his godmother and for his friend Eca de Queiroz (a famous Portugese author), he describes life in Africa - the privileged whites, the slaves and the (mixed-race) 'children -of -the -country'. And here he falls in love with the beautiful, but married, Creole woman, Ana Olimpia.
Enslavement of the one he loves, an alligator hunt, re-location to Brazil and the political fallout from his opposition to slavery.... Agualusa tells a very readable story, that vividly describes a part of the world which rarely features in fiction. But there is also the deeper side of his thoughts on the Portugese colonies of the era:
"Once dropped into Africa the unfortunate Portugese try in the first place to keep themselves in the saddle - that is, alive and thieving - little caring in which direction the continent is headed. And Portugal, having once dropped them there, has forgotten all about them."
Leaves a strong impression in a short novel.

something got lost in translation

the book won the Portuguese Grand Prize for Literature and there is uneasy feeling about slavery in connection with the Portuguese
control over Angola and Brazil in the late nineteenth century and it is admirable that an attempt has been made to do a translation. Unfortunately in the translation some of the intense meaning of the original has been lost. For Example ,he relates briefly a story of an attempt on the life of a narrator and describes how he was not bothered by the shooting because he has some 'very high-calibre enemies'. The term high- calibre does not fit in with a narrator of the late nineteenth century and I assume an experienced novelist writing in Portuguese in the language of a late nineteenth-century narrator would have found used a word which would have been current for the times. It is still nice to have a translation and the translator is to be congratulated .

Michael Korda's fictionalized account of Anglo-Indian actress Merle Oberon's claim to fame in Hollywood's golden era is a delight from start to finish. Naming her Dawn Avalon and putting her at risk when she is wrongfully accused of murder, Dawn flees India to London where, as Queenie Kelley, she becomes a superstar of the stage and screen, while trying her best to stay incognito. Effectively narrated, Korda's story takes you back to a time when studio kings were enthralled by their star pets, as Queenie Kelly was by many, but especially by writer/director David Konig. Their union during the making of his movie is as enchanting and as riveting as the entire novel itself. Glamorous to the core, with colorful characters and edge-of-your-seat intrigue, QUEENIE is a perfect example of great escapist fiction.-----Martin Boucher

Excellent Read

This is one of my all time favorite books. It is a winding story that begins in India and takes you through the Golden Era of Hollywood. You really can't put it down. You love the heroine, depite her mistakes and flaws, and truly hate the villains. There are so many twists and turns. I highly recommend this book!

CHIC OR CHI CHI?

I first read "Queenie" ten years ago. It was a sexy, spicy, great, warm splash of a read. Somehow the fact that it was the retelling of Merle Oberon's story eluded me. I enjoyed the book immensely, personally identifying with the heroine's struggle to discover exactly what mold she's "caste" in as well as her personal and political victories over prejudice & racism in the industry. Why read "Queenie" again?
One of the characters in a book I'm reading made reference to Miss Oberon's appearance as "Cathy" in "Wuthering Heights" commenting that "she didn't look CHI CHI,(Anglo/Indian) but she was you know." Checked out vitals on net and clicked with the fact that Ms. Oberon was first known as Queenie O'Brian. And was once married to someone named Alexander Korda (as in Michael's uncle). This book is probably closer to "the facts" than some of the Botox injected, pufferies that currently pass for biographies.

Worst investment ever made and I blame whichever jerk that designed my leadership course.

This book was nothing but walls of dry text and scientific studies.

How practical is it to teach leadership from purely academic research papers?

International edition is identical to the standard edition - while I agree with the other comments that the content itself is pretty bad, most of us aren't reading this for pleasure, but instead because we're required to for class. 5 stars for saving me money

A must read for cat owners

A must read for any cat owner or animal lover. This book is packed with useful and interesting information on cats and cat behavior. I've read many different cat books, and this book had new information that was very helpful and applicable. Very informative. I definitely feel like I understand my cat better after reading this book. I (and my cat) would HIGHLY recommend this. Two paws up!

If I could talk to the animals

I loved this book, and, no I'm not a 70 year old "cat lady". Actually, I'm a middle aged guy that got tired of trying to figure what my daughter's cat was whining about. Long story short, my new fuzzy pal and I now exchange nose bumps, trills and toy fun. As bizarre as it seems, we seem to communicate, and it's fun.

A colorful cat "encyclopedia" for all ages

I grew up on in a big farmhouse that was always occupied by a couple of full time resident "mousers" who took their responsibilities seriously, so I loved cats and kittens, not fancy breeds, just plain house cats. My knowledge of them was limited to what I observed on my own.

HOW TO SPEAK CAT was a delightful eye-opener because of its inviting cover, its gorgeous full color cat photographs on every page, and the easy-to-comprehend layout with multi-sized, multi-colored fonts all of which seem to be screaming (mewling?),"Read me!"

Though designed for Middle Readers, this book has a much wider audience. Every person who has ever loved a cat or loves one now will find it sheer delight. Besides showing the reader how to decode cat language, the book contains many intriguing tales and tidbits about these marvelous creatures. I can't wait to tell my friends in Perthshire, Scotland, that "Towser, a female cat in Perthshire, holds the world record for being the best mouser. In 23 years, she caught 28,899 mice." (I wonder who kept the tally.)
