Although DOS 6 made changes to some of the text, this is the best guide to the old OS. Very helpful data structures written in ANSI C makes sense of many mysteries. Even if you're a FREEDOS acolyte, its worth understanding how the original worked and why.

Second half of the book is written in Kinyarwanda

The first half was pretty good. Lots of background on the Rwandan people and good information on customs. Then there is a long section on the language. However, at this point the author must assume that you've mastered Kinyarwanda because the second half of the book is written completely in the Rwandan native language.

So first half of the book pretty good and educational, and second half is in a foreign language that I don't speak.

About the Author
Sigmund Freud (1856-1939) is one of the twentieth century's greatest minds and the founder of the psychoanalytic school of psychology. His many works include The Ego and the Id; An Outline of Psycho-Analysis; Inhibitions; Symptoms and Anxiety; New Introductory Lectures on Psycho-Analysis; Civilization and Its Discontent, and others.

Peter Gay (1923―2015) was the author of more than twenty-five books, including the National Book Award winner The Enlightenment, the best-selling Weimar Culture, and the widely translated Freud: A Life for Our Time.

Freud on Religion

Reading Freud is always refreshing -- not only is he a good writer, but he also has many deep psychological insights. In his 71 page text, "The Future of an Illusion," he tackles the subject of religion. A livelong atheist, Freud argues that religion is derived from a child-like sense of helplessness in the world. Its purpose, he says, is to explain the sometimes-unfathomable world, to provide societal order, and to give comfort and happiness (particularly for the "the masses" and the poor, uneducated and oppressed). Although Freud wants to reshape civilization's relationship with religion, he also recognizes that widespread atheism could undermine societal stability. Overall, this is a good, quick read -- perfect for those interested in religion/atheism, psychology and the intersection between the two.

Religion Explained ... Again

This short book is well worth the plunge. It gives a psychoanalytic answer to the questions, Why God? and Why we still need a god? The book, written late in Freud's career, remains controversial mostly because of the nature of the subject matter. However, one should not be surprised that Freud's analysis ends as it does - suggesting that the world might be better off without religion. Many reviewers attribute this conclusion to the fact that Freud himself was not a religious man. However, another point of view might be equally valid: any psychoanalytic analysis of religion -- even by a theist -- would likely have come to the same conclusion.

In fact, Freud's conclusion -- that religion is an illusion born out of a need to surmount fear of the unknown, with its central component being a "father complex" - - is not far removed from, and actually resonates with, that of other scientists -- in particular with John F. Schumaker's "The Wings of Illusion," as well as his much deeper "The Corruption of Reality," which carries these ideas much further; or even Pascal Boyer's "Religion Explained." For a refreshing opposing point of view that is also scientific, I found Peter Berger's Rumors of Angels a sensitive counterbalance to Freud's non-emotional approach.

While this was not Freud's best work, neither is it his worse. Given his Civilizations and its Discontents, it would be difficult to imagine him not having left a firm statement on the psychoanalytic nature of religion.

Because it is Freud, it deserves Five Stars.

Scientifc Analysis of Religion

This is Freud's scientific analysis of religion. Religion, along with government and social, moral and ethical codes, or, civilization act as removing man from his true instinctal and destructive nature into a civil society. Religion is a neccessary illusion derived from men's wishes.
Freud can be applauded and admired as a great thinker and psychoanalyst. This is an essential book to read. Yet Freud misses out on the mystical experience, the religious or psychal ability to perceive the irrational, the awe of the numenous, the perceived knowledge apart from rational thinking and intellectual analysis. Or in Rudolph Otto's title, "the idea of the holy."
Freud ends his book, on page 71 with:
"No, our science is no illusion. But an illusion
it would be to suppose that what science
cannot give us we can get elsewhere."
So Freud was amazingly accurate on one religious foundation: human ability to create wishes and to civilize himself and in contrast Freud was missing a great deal in the mystical, the non-rational element, thus he discarded all religion as a universally accepted solution to the conflicts that arise in childhood relation to the father. While this may have some validity, it misses completely the symbolic mythological teachings that attempt to convey what is claimed universal to be real religious experience. This is where Freud leaves off and Carl Jung continues.

A great little scale reference and cheap too!

This is a great scale book for guitarist and one that I refer to often. I still haven't found the ONE perfect scale book (hence only four stars), but this one comes close. It is one of three scale books that I use, and because of its compact size, it is usually the one that I have handy when I need it. Troy does a great job of explaining the scales and giving some exercises for practice. What I like best about this book is that it shows the scales in all positions across 22 frets with the root notes highlighted. Also, many scale books only show fretboard diagrams of the scales in one key, usually C or E and then explain how to move them around. This book includes diagrams of several keys (including G and A, which are favorites of mine). The only other thing I wish about this book is that it was spiral bound so it would lay flat when open, but I would rather have this book than any of the other gig bag sized ones that are spiral bound. All in all a great little scale reference and cheap too!

Small Cheap and full of information

By far it contains a wide diverse set of scales, fingerings, and even a few exotic scales at the end. It is small enough to fit in any gig bag or guitar case, making it very conveninet. Unlike other scale/method books that present one scale and make a few variaitions on it, this one uses entirely different scales in different keys.....another great book by Troy Stetina

definitely not for beginners!

This may well be the most lucid and interesting treatment of guitar scales every written, but since I can't make sense of half of what he says, it does me little good. It suffers from a very common problem with instructional material on music. It throws out terms without explanation, uses a variety of interchangeable terms without discrimination, and doesn't define the terminology except occasionally in the middle of an explanation where it does not belong. In short, If you don't already know about music and theory, you'll likely be lost in pretty short order.

For Example: "Tonality refers to the pitch of the starting note, or "root" note. For example, A major and G major demonstrate two different tonalities. Different tonalities may also be called simply "different keys." " So a "key" is a "tonalitiy?"...then, "Modalities may be referred to to as being different "types of keys." " ...so then "modalities" must also mean different "types of tonalities" since tonalities equal keys? ....then "So any scale or key requires two things to be specified - a starting pitch (tonality).....BUT WHOA.. didn't we just learn that a tonality is also a key? So then a key, and a tonality, and a pitch are all the same thing...heck, if they all mean the same thing why are we referring to them by 3 diferent names? WEll, me thinks you get the idea. By the time I got done with the first few paragraphs, it had become so convoluted that I simply moved on to other things.

Might be great for music majors, which is the same things as music students (persons who study music), but for the uninitiated its a wipeout.

superb commentary

Rarely do I read a commentary that provokes my thinking and provides insight in the way this commentary has. The author not only has a mastery of the material in Deuteronomy better than any other commentary I have on the book, but he also shows its application to people under the New Covenant and nations in general. I have grown in my understanding not only of Deuteronomy but the Mosaic Law as a whole through reading this book. I heartily recommend it.

An easy worthwhile read

This book came as a pleasant surprise for my personal study in Deuteronomy. Christopher Wright is an excellent writer and gives an engaging and thought-provoking exposition of the book. There are some helpful discussions throughout on the "ethics" of difficult issues, a number of helpful tie-ins with other Old Testament passages, and even a little application (without becoming overly "preachy"). The book is definitely targeted towards the layman / low-level preacher. It requires no knowledge of Hebrew, so it should be an easy read for those not trained in the languages. The book is solidly conservative and doesn't waste time getting bogged down in the mess of critical issues surrounding the book. Overall, while this was not my last stop in the study of Deuteronomy, it was certainly helpful in getting a "big picture" understanding of the text. I particularly enjoyed his handling of the speech in chapters 4-11, and his presentation of the flow of thought throughout those chapters.

The biggest downside to this book (and the reason for only four stars) is the "thinness" of the book in some places. As with other books in this series, this commentary is rather brief. Those looking for a more exhaustive in-depth study will need another book to read along with this. Most of the finer exegetical points are relegated to the footnotes. Some chapters only get five pages of material at best, (especially in the Law code section of chapters 12-26). Worse, the section on blessings and curses (chapter 28) gets a measly three and a half page summary, which overviews the chapter, but never really comments on specific features of the text. (There weren't even footnotes in that chapter!). This naturally leaves the reader wishing for more. For what this book is trying to do, it does it well. However, for those trying to really dig into the text, this book will need to supplement or be supplemented.

This is an excellent resource on the book of Deuteronomy. It is very detailed and relatively easy to read. I would highly suggest it. As always, you must purge out certain items that you will not agree with. Ultimately, however, you will find the book to be an excellent commentary.
