    Fluff much?

    I hope you like reading the same fluff over and over again, because that's what you're getting here. Giant book that is filled with information that should only use 1/3 of the book, IF that. Not only is it filled with massive fluff, but this book contradicts itself everywhere, even within the same paragraph.

    Full of worthless fluff

    The book is full of FLUFF! It is constantly repeating itself and giving worthless statistics. About 1/4 of the information in the book is need to know. The online NCLEX questions that come with the book are great for the professors who use the books test bank for their tests. I've seen multiple NCLEX questions on my exams in class that were on their web site.

    As most everyone buying this, you're probably in nursing school. This is the text for the program I am in. First note, be prepared to devote a decent amount of your time on this text. Like others have mentioned, it is very thorough but that also comes with lots of material and some repetition. Probably a harder read that my med-surg book which is not a positive attribute. Smaller text; each page is loaded with info. Organization wise, not the most planned out textbook I've had but not the worst; pretty much on par with your average text.

    I rooted for this couple

    I didn't buy this title when it first came out, the reviews weren't plentiful and most of them spoke of the female lead being weak; real sick of female doormats personally. When the story came around again I decided to give it a try. The complicate relationship Bliss shares with her friends is explained and when she needs to stand up for herself she does. I enjoyed her relationship with Aric, the turns it took, the way issues were resolved, the humor and will happily continue to buy this authors work.

    I love this book, I read it a while ago and it was great. I enjoyed the characters Aric and Bliss, they are great together. I wanted to hurt her friends but loved how things turned out for Bliss and Aric.

Mr. Crilly served in executive positions at Eastern Airlines, Pan American World Airways, Riegel Paper, & Bowmar Instrument Corp.

     

    Andrew J. SHERMAN is a partner in the Washington, D.C. office of Jones Day, a global law firm. Mr. Sherman is a corporate and transactional attorney and is a recognized international authority on the legal and strategic aspects of business growth, with a focus on mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, strategic alliances, capital formation, franchising, and other types of intellectual property leveraging and growth strategies. Mr. Sherman is also the author of eighteen books, including Franchising & Licensing: Two Ways to Build Your Business (AMACOM, 2003), Raising Capital (AMACOM, 2005) and Mergers and Acquisitions from A to Z (AMACOM, 2006).

    An Acquirers' must read

    Recently, I read a great book by William Crilly and Andrew Sherman called, The AMA Handbook of Due Diligence.

    I have been involved in a number of transactions, both on the buy and sell side, and I like this book because it takes a very complicated and involved process and explains it in a way that is thorough, clear, and best of all, concise. This book focuses its attention on potential buyers, and can act as either a road map for the inexperienced acquirer, or a point of reinforcement for those who have experience in acquisition due diligence.

    The process of performing due diligence on a targeted acquisition has two main parts, as I see them:

    1. Analysis of the company itself. It is important to understand a company's financial statements (and whether they are truly representative), its current health, growth strategy, planned product expansion/improvements, and all other facets that are specific to the company.

    2. Analysis of the industry in which the company operates. The book lays out very clearly the information that is necessary to understand where a specific company fits with regards to market share, barriers to growth, etc.

    In order to effectively evaluate a company and its place in the industry, Crilly and Sherman note you must know:

    · Where to look

    · What to ask

    · What tools to use

    · Who to ask

    · How to test premises/answers

    · Who should ask

    The process, the book explains, is just as much an art as it is a science. The "art" aspect of due diligence is the style and experience to know which questions to ask and how and when to ask them. The "science" comes in the form of preparation of comprehensive and customized checklists.

    There is a section at the end of the book that includes these comprehensive checklists. They are very detailed and offer a great starting point for investigation of a potential transaction. From my experience I have a good general idea of what I am looking for in a company both in terms of profitability and competitive advantage, but also with regard to risk. However, these checklists provide an excellent foundation and, if utilized, can highlight the opportunity or red flags in a potential transaction. Buy the book just for the checklists.

    Large - Complete - Costly, but worth it

    What is it? Hardback complete episode guide to the Simpsons. It has a sewn in book mark (the sign of high class real serious books). In fact, it might have been better as two hard back volumes.
    Is it just a re-hash of the older published guides with some new stuff? NO! While there is some recycled stuff, there is new stuff which wasn't in the earlier guides, so even for seasons 1-10 there are new bits and pieces.
    Besides the usual episode synopsis (1003 pages worth), writer-director-executive director-guest star credits, what else is there?     I own the other episode guides as well and this makes my collection complete. My friends love to read through it and there is so much stuff in there I didn't know, it might take years before I read it all. I could only imagine what kind of effort went into making this book.. 1200 pages! If there was ever anything you ever wanted to know about The Simpsons, it's probably in this book.

    Don't ignore this book

    I've been following Cal Newport's ideas for a while now, so when I learned that he was coming out with a book, I pre-ordered it from Amazon. I was not disappointed. If you have a child or know someone in college who is trying to figure out what to do with their life, or even if you're north of fifty and still wonder what you'll be when you grow up, then this book is for you. So Good They Can't Ignore You, is so good that you shouldn't ignore it.

    The central premise that sets this book apart from so much life advice that is out on the market is that following your passion is terrible advice. There are two main reasons for this: first, very few people at a young age know enough about life to choose something to be really passionate about, and even if they do, they are bound to be wrong. If Steve Jobs had followed his early passion, maybe he would have made a dent in the universe as a Buddhist monk.

    Second, while most people would love to have a job that allows them to be creative, make an impact on the world, and have control over how they choose to spend their time, jobs like that are rare and valuable, and the only way to get something valuable is to offer something in return. And the only way to be in a position to do that is to master a difficult skill. Passion doesn't waive the laws of economics, and if it's not difficult it won't be rare. The book cites the example of Julia, who quit a secure job in advertising to pursue her passion of teaching yoga. Armed with a 4-week course, she quit her job, began teaching, and one year later was on food stamps. Here's a hint: if a four-week course is enough to allow you to set up shop, do you think you might have a little competition?

    Taking the economic model a step further, the book argues that you must develop career capital, which comprises skills, relationships and a body of work. The long and arduous process of building your capital also opens up your options and refines your own understanding of what you really like to do and what you can be good at.

    Newport offers the craftsman mindset in place of the passion mindset. The passion mindset asks what the world can offer you in terms of fulfillment and fun; the craftsman mindset forces you to look inside and ask what you can offer the world. You have to create value to get value, and that takes time and deliberate practice. It's the only way to get so good that they can't ignore you. The nice benefit is that rather than being good at something because you love it, you love doing something because you've gotten good at it. (Note the similarity to Carol Dweck's growth mindset.)

    What's the little idea? Another idea that Newport challenges is the common advice that you should have a big idea--set a big hairy audacious goal for your life and then work backward from it. The master plan approach certainly works for some people, but how many people do you know who have actually lived their lives that way? Instead, you should work forward from where you are, taking small steps that expand your capabilities and build up your career capital. In this way, more options and possibilities open up. Newport compares career discoveries to scientific discoveries, most of which occur in what's called the "adjacent possible", or just on the other side of the cutting edge of current knowledge.

    The book is well-written. Newport emulates Malcolm Gladwell's technique of telling individual stories to illustrate the main point in each chapter. In addition, the arc of the stories follows a master story thread through the book, so that you feel like you are brought along on his quest to figure it all out.
    Here comes the part I did not like about the book, and I would not devote so much space to it if the author were not an MIT PhD, just beginning his career as an assistant professor of computer science.

    The methodology in the book is suspect in two ways. While its stories are the book's great strength, the plural of anecdote is not data, and it's surprising how little hard data we're given. I certainly buy in because it makes sense and it matches my own life experience, but someone with a more skeptical point of view may be a tougher sell.

    In at least one case, where he does use a peer-reviewed study for support, he overstates the case. Citing a paper by Amy Wrzesniewski, he states that the happiest, most passionate employees are not those who followed their passion into a position, but those who stayed around long enough to be good at what they do. If you read the actual paper, you won't find that conclusion, and in fact the author stresses that the sample size of 24 is too small to draw any firm conclusions.

    That said, I strongly recommend this book to just about anyone, regardless of where you are in your career.

    Decent points, very poorly argued

    The basic premise of this book is thought-provoking and very relevant to so many of us struggling through career decisions. The primary point which Newport gets across is unambiguously true: finding a "passion" before setting off in your career is extremely difficult, and perhaps even counterproductive. Developing a very solid set of skills which are somewhat rare and valuable is the only way to position oneself into a meaningful job with any sort of autonomy and humanity. This is essential, especially in the competitive world we live in. And competency itself is related to self-satisfaction—perhaps even moreso than any intrinsic interests we might have. Good points.

    However, the book falls flat in almost every other aspect, from the explanations, to the real-world examples, to the relevancy for the vast majority of professional laborers sitting in cubicles today. This is not surprising given Newport's background in prestige and academics, and the quite unorthodox path he's taken. This issue follows through the entire book with example after example of people and their careers that can only be characterized as esoteric and extreme. The hyper-successful individuals he profiles as examples of people happy with their careers are starkly contrasted by the obvious hubris of those he interviews who are not. There is no middle ground, which is, unfortunately, the vast majority of us, who are neither ridiculously foolhardy nor overachievers to the extreme.

    This book and its author smacks of the Tim Ferriss-style cure-all self-help trash which is all born out of an unrigorous, hyped-up, TED Talk-syle, fast-food intellectualism which is so tempting to consume in the blogging age. Beware of the hype, remember this book was written in less than 6 months, work hard, and find a job you don't hate for Christ's sake.

    What abou the rest of us?

    First, I will say that this is an excellent book. In a world of so many different ways to make a living, this is a fresh new path to follow. It really is good advice. Just because people love doing things doesn't mean that people will pay you for it. The trick is to get really good at something and then people will come to you. Essentially, when people come to you, you are negotiating from a position of power and you can set whatever terms will make you happy. You not a morning person? Say you'll work from 12-8. Don't like Tuesdays? Take that day off. It all boils down to having control over your own life. It's the same idea about an encyclopedia vs Wikipedia. The more successful one is the one where anyone can add anything anytime they wanted. They're not even being paid, they just really want to add an article about mustard at 3am.

    However, I started getting an elitist feel from the book about halfway through, and it's the reason I gave it only 3 stars. The people he talks about in his book are those buisness/computer people who: A)Know how to start and run a business, B)Can work from home (all they need is a computer), and/or C)have a skill that makes hundreds if not thousands of dollars an hour. Not to mention, most of them have PhD's. One person he talks about started a music company, sold it for 22 million, donated all the money, globe trotted for a few years, then started another freakin' company. Would this book be worth something to a nurse? A teacher? A police officer? Or are these people who have followed their "passion" and this book is just for a select number of people who's highly paid skills are transferable?

    'Good to great' for small companies

    If you're not working for a company that needs to worry about scaling out to hundreds of people, and you have no wish to ever do so, then Small Giants: Companies That Choose to be Great Instead of Big by Bo Burlingham is for you. Full of inspiring case studies ranging from two-person shops to small restaurant chains employing hundreds of people, this book analyses what makes small companies tick and how they became great without exploding and ruining the culture. 'Our biggest competition is mediocrity' is my favourite quote from this book, and it perfectly reflects the attitude that most of the case studies promote.

    Burlingham identifies several patterns in the case studies, and lays out three imperatives for companies that want to make an impact and stay small:

    - Articulate, demonstrate and embed a higher purpose into the company, completely integrating that purpose so that it becomes an everyday presence and not just a vision statement on a piece of paper.
    - Create a culture of intimacy that continuously reminds people unexpectedly about how much the company cares about them
    - Foster collegiality.

    If this sounds as a kind of the place you would like to work at, grab the book and transform your organisation. Essentially, this book is Good to Great, but for organisations that do not want to go public. It's not a particularly new book, but I discovered it recently, and I think it will be valuable for anyone working in startups or thinking of starting one. The book is written in a very clear and engaging style, with lots of great stories, and gets five out of five stars from me.

    Small Giant - Surface Level Stories

    Purchased this book based on a recommendation from a podcast. I am the owner of two small businesses and found very little value in this book, it is one of the few books I stopped reading after only reading 50%. If you are looking for how to create a Small Giant business, I could not recommend this book. If you are a Small Giant business and looking for inspirational stories it might be worth the read.

    Good advice for small business owners

    I am a Family Business Advisor. This book offers insights and practical advice that my clients can use. For example:
    1. Legal protection is a poor substitute for innovation. I and the book's author are not big fans of patents.

    2. If you have no profits, you've got a hole in your business somewhere. If you can't find it, ask for help.

    3. University National Bank & Trust, one of the small giants featured in the book, defined their culture BEFORE they defined their strategy. Their leaders were aware of what Peter Drucker often mentioned, "Culture eats strategy for lunch."
