Easy read, great color pictures!

The Coico Immunology book is what I am currently using as my (required) textbook for medical school Immuno course. It is a GREAT text, especially this new edition. Fabulous color pictures (I am all about the pics!) and easy to read text. Plus, it's not a huge volume, so everything is summed up comprehensively but succintly (leaving nothing out, without being a tome). Highly recommended textbook.

Excellent Upper-Level Undergraduate Text

I am a professor who teaches a General Immunology course at an Undergraduate University. The Janeway book was too much for my undergraduate course so it came down to Basic Immunology (Abbas) and Coico's text. Certainly the Abbas book is a bit 'flasher' better (more colorful) cartoons, more photos of tissues, but I ultimately went with the Coico text because I like the less complicated images and I think the writing is a little clearer. I supplement the text with a Cases in Immunology. I would say though that either the Abbas or the Coico text would have suited my class well and I'm sure the Abbas text will appeal to other students(or faculty) more.

Great text for upper level immunology

This is the required text for a 400 level immunology course I'm taking. Many of the text books for the upper level courses I have taken have been difficult to understand. This book does an excellent job of explaining complicated concepts in an easy to understand manner. I wish many of the other textbooks I have were this easy to comprehend. This is one of the only textbooks where I can understand the concepts pretty well just from reading the book.

My only complaint is I wish it was a more durable paperback. I'm using it a lot, so its getting a bit beat up.

In a global economy, it is crucial for business people to be sensitive to cultural differences. And although the best reason for doing so may be ethical, it's great for business as well! This is an invaluable book for "doing well while doing good" in your intercultural relations, covering the protocols of appointments, business entertaining, greetings, forms of address, gestures, dress, and gifts in 60 of the nations you're most likely to be doing business. Some interesting excerpts:

• Australia: The "thumbs-up" sign, which in the U.S. indicates "O.K." is considered rude.
  
• Brazil: The colors of the Brazilian flag are green and yellow, so avoid wearing this combination in any fashion.
  
• China: Avoid making exaggerated gestures or using dramatic facial expressions. The Chinese do not generally use their hands when speaking, and become distracted by a speaker who does.
  
• Indonesia: Since it is impolite to disagree with someone, Indonesians rarely say "no"...a clear way to indicate "no" is to suck in air through the teeth.

The authors are very aware that no generalizations apply to all residents of a nation, and are careful not to stereotype or judge. Highly recommended to any business traveler--or any student of the diversity of human cultures.

With GATT, NAFTA, and the globalization of business, there is a growing interest in the way cultural differences affect business transactions. A few guides do exist, notably Roger Axtell's Do's and Taboos around the World (1993) and The Do's and Taboos of International Trade (1994), but usually the information must be compiled or searched for country by country, and it is not always conveniently or consistently classified. The authors of this encyclopedic resource have put together "cultural" profiles for 60 countries that will be of value to anyone involved with international business. Brief information regarding the history of the country, the type of government, languages, religions, and demographics are included. The authors then provide what they call a cultural orientation for each country, identifying "cognitive styles, negotiation strategies, and value systems." A summary of business practices (appointment scheduling, negotiating do's and don'ts, business entertaining, and time zone information) follows. Finally, "protocol" considerations, such as greetings, titles and forms of address, gestures, gift giving, and appropriate dress, are offered. Invaluable resource for those working in a global context

I've worked extensively on six continents. Having grown up all over the world, navigating work politics in different cultural environments came relatively easily to me. Still, I found this book incredibly valuable as I sought to maximize my effectiveness, successfully lead large global teams on complex initiatives, and strengthen my relationships with my colleagues.

Essential for any international business person

At first glance, you might think that a book that offers advice on business protocol in 60 countries would be superficial in its advice on each one. But this is a great "read" and browsing from country to country can emphasize the key cultural differences when you are visiting just one country. There's even a section on the US, and it's good to learn that we are almost the only country in the world where strangers get straight down to business (Ever asked a visitor:"How was your flight?" then realized you didn't even listen to the answer before launching into business.)
This book contains both the important practical matters (bring a gift, wrap it in certain colors, don't expect it to be opened in front of you) and also some interesting academic issues: "Locus of control" and "sources of anxiety reduction." You'll be pleased to know that Americans don't worry about anxiety much--except about deadlines at work.

High-end horror

Shadowland, by Peter Straub, is a piece of really excellent high-end horror. The book begins in a private prep school for boys. In this school, Del and Tom, two freshmen boys fascinated by magic, find each other and form a strong friendship. Together, they learn card tricks, try to figure out why the whole school is having nightmares, dodge the crazy headmaster of the school, and do the sort of pal-around that only boys of a certain age can do. Their school year culminates with a big talent show in which Del and Tom plan to perform a magical exhibition. Circumstances in the story keep this from happening and the boys retire for the summer to the estate of Del's uncle, Shadowland.
Del's uncle is a half-crazy, alcoholic, retired magician. He sets about teaching the boys magic. His magic, though, consists of more than tricking the eye with a slight of hand. At Shadowland, nothing is as it seems. An hour can feel like all day. The sun can set at 11am. You can find yourself suddenly half-way across a continent, just to find that you haven't moved from your spot at all. There are others living at Shadowland that are unseen, and whose existence is denied. There are rules that are made in the hopes of being broken. As Del's uncle spends the summer recounting his life, in all it's horror, to the boys Tom realizes that the horror is only starting. As he sees things that can't be real, but are, and he sees the immediate horrors being committed at Shadowland, Tom realizes that he has to leave, and Del must come with him. Unfortunately, for Tom and Del, Uncle Collins has realized something about Tom that even Tom doesn't yet know - and he wants it for himself.
In Shadowland, Peter Straub has written a brilliant piece of fiction. There are plots, subplots, and subplots within those. Nothing in this book is without purpose to the story. Straub's writing, which has a definite British bent, despite the story being set in the United States, is very literary and rich. More complex than Stephen King, Straub is still very readable, especially to those who like a thicker story. No one who enjoys literary horror will be disappointed for having read this book.

A Nelgected Horror Classic

Straub burst into fame with his previous book "Ghost Story" but this book has always been my favorite. It has stories within stories, details in one part that take on ominous meanings later in the story, and a weird meshing of magic and Grimm fairy tales. What is real and what is not is a constant question and never fully answered. It does lead to a very stunning though violent ending. It is also a coming of age book but so different from many others of that type. Truly unique which may be why it confused people at first because it fit no clear cut category. With its stunning deatil and visual images, I am amazed no one ever made this book into a movie.

A tradition

I first read this in 1984 at a christian youthcamp 'retreat' with compulsory 'outdoor activities' in subzero weather. It was there that I got hooked on quote marks and phonics. It was there that I began to see that adults could be as clueless as children.

I return to this book at Christmas when the weather looks bleak. As a coming of age novel, it speaks more clearly to me than some classics I could name.

One caution

The first pages confuse. Mr. Straub likes to spin you around before telling you a story. It breaks you out of your world and preps you for his. I'm lucky to find such a great story teller.

Many students reading this text will be enrolled in their first class in economics. For many (indeed, perhaps for most), it will also be their last class in economics. Why? Not everyone wants to be an economist, business owner, banker, or any of the myriad careers for which the study of economics is essential. So what can a course in economics do besides provide a few credits for those on their way toward degrees in engineering, environmental resources, nursing, graphic design, education, or other disciplines? Frankly, for those willing to put forth the effort to understand the basics of the economic way of thinking, even one course in economics can do a lot. My goal in writing Introduction to Economics: Social Issues and Economic Thinking is to foster an understanding of the basic tools and core reasoning that underlie decision making and problem solving, and to teach students to apply this way of thinking to an array of social and personal issues. Although specific occupations may require particular skills, these particular skill sets necessarily change and evolve over time. The need for people who can think, learn, and solve problems does not change. In Social Issues and Economic Thinking, I emphasize these critical-thinking and problem-solving skills. Introductory courses in economics are generally taught using either a principles of economics approach or an issues in economics approach. Based on my own teaching experiences using each pedagogical approach for several years, students tend to be more involved and enthusiastic about the material when taught using the issues-based approach. The issues approach is also more fun for the professor and has drawn more students into the economics major at my institution. In their investigations of the issues pedagogy, Grimes and Nelson (1998) conducted controlled experiments to examine learning outcomes in issues-based versus traditional principles of economics courses. They found no significant difference in learning outcomes between the two pedagogical approaches but higher rates of course completion for students in the issues-based course. My intent is that Social Issues and Economic Thinking will bring to the issues market a better integration of the issues-based pedagogy with the conceptual framework of social welfare economics. The toolkit chapters are essential to doing this, in particular the chapters Consumer Surplus, Producer Surplus, and Economic Efficiency (Chapter 3) and the Power and Limits of Markets (Chapter 8). These chapters are oft en overlooked (or completely excluded) as a means to provide an accessible conceptual framework for students to judge the tradeoff s associated with market interventions and other social policies. By fully illustrating the concepts of efficiency and social welfare and by highlighting that economic systems face tradeoff s between efficiency and equity and between security and liberty, these chapters provide students with a method for evaluating social problems and policy responses and the inherent tradeoff s they pose. Students should finish the text with an appreciation of the great power of markets to organize societies and with an appreciation for the times in which markets alone cannot yield optimal outcomes. I hope the text will be a "myth buster" for students, who oft en hold very naïve black-and-white ideas about be-all and end-all policy responses on both the laissez-faire and government intervention ends of the spectrum.

About the Author
Dr. Wendy Stock is a Professor of Economics and Department Head of the Department of Agricultural Economics and Economics at Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana. She holds Ph.D. and M.A. degrees in economics from Michigan State University and a B.A. in economics from Weber State University. Dr. Stock has taught economics at the introductory through graduate levels for more than two decades. She served on the American Economic Association Committee on Economic Education from 2005 to 2011, coordinated the group's annual poster session on active learning techniques in economics from 2007 to 2011, and has directed the American Economic Association Graduate Studies in Economics website since 2006. She was awarded the Montana State University James and Mary Ross Provost's Award for Excellence in 2010 in recognition of teaching and scholarship excellence. She was named Professor of the Month by the Montana State University Mortar Board in 2009, earned an Award for Excellence from Montana State in 2006 and again in 2009, was the winner of the Montana State University Betty Coffey Award in 2005 in recognition of her contributions on behalf of women, and was awarded the William L. Stamey Undergraduate Teaching Award at Kansas State University in 1998. She currently teaches ECON 101 The Economic Way of Thinking to several hundred Montana State University students each semester. She also teaches Peer Leadership, Labor and Human Resource Economics, and graduate and undergraduate Econometrics at Montana State.

Dr. Stock lives in Bozeman with her husband, Ken, her two children, and the family's assortment of pets, including dogs, cats, gerbils, and fish. All give her great utility.
