Great book by an amazing artist

I've been waiting for this book before I even knew I was waiting for this book. I was turned onto Hische's work in my fundamental college design classes and have since been stalking her website for inspiration during my own lettering projects. For what it's worth, I do consider Hische to be the greatest modern vector letterer there is, so I suppose this review is somewhat biased.

What I respect about Hische is that she's willing to share her secrets. If you've taken her Skillshare classes, there's a lot of repetitive info here, but even so it's great to have it in documented form so that you don't have to go back and watch the videos. If you haven't, well, prepare to get a lot of information thrown onto you that makes this a must-have manual for any aspiring letterer. What I believe is new content not seen in her video and on her website are all of the sketches, right down to the erased lines and pencil indents on the paper. The sketches not being 'retouched' to look perfect is absolutely wonderful and reassuring that not even the best letters get their lines right the first time. Hische shows her process for an intricate print featuring her most famous quote from beginning to finish, and then dives into different work she's done for clients. All of it is gorgeous, and I would be totally content with just a book of her work, but her sketches and rationales for everything bring it to life so much more.

Not to mention, this is one gorgeous book inside and out. The hardcover is thick and vibrant, the interior is designed so well, and you can tell so much care was taken with the presentation. It's a masterpiece as far as design books go and sets the standard for lettering books to come.

I've purchase many hand-lettering books, and this is by far one of the bests. (i'd expect nothing less from Jessica Hische). Her text is insightful and easy to understand. This book shows off some great process work from start to finish. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone: From the beginner to the Pro.

I would have like to see more rough thumbnails

I have mixed feelings about this book. I picked it up based on the premise that it showed the author's "process" and sketches when working on a project, in contrast to most books about design only show the final image. And while she does offer some insights into each project, most of the sketchbook images are the final draft, ready to be scanned and used in Illustrator. I would have like to see more rough thumbnails, false starts, and abandoned routes on the way to the final image. Including more of these would have helped tremendously.

So props to the author for lifting the curtain surrounding the process a bit, but disappointment that she does not pull it back completely and show projects from beginning to end.

I read the Kindle version and am happy to report that it is great. Lots of custom typefaces and impeccable formatting. A lot of work went into the design of the digital version, which most publishers would treat as an afterthought.

I can never figure out how to rerview a book without giving it all away. And I hate the people that do that. So I will just say that it's well researched, and very dark. It, as usual grabbed me at the start, and kept me there till the last page. I can only hope it's just a fantasy.

A quick informative book for new DJs

I bought this book to get a basic understanding of how to DJ and that's exactly what I got.

There really is no stone unturned with this book and it exposes the reader to many different DJing concepts. It is very quick to read cover to cover which is exactly what I was looking for. A no frills guide to DJing, plain and simple.

A few sections of the book may seem to state the obvious if you have any sort of background in audio or music but it is nice to have everything in one place rather than aimlessly googling bits and pieces of info on the web. This book confirmed a lot of my suspicions about DJing and was well worth the money.

Great primer on the art/business of DJ'ing

This book delivered in ways I wasn't expecting. I purchased this for the more technical portions of the book, and while still relevant, the content is very dated (published in 2002) in regards to digital formats, and promoting one's self on the internet.

The portions of book dedicated to DJ technique were strong, but I felt like alot of the information contained there was vague. How exactly do you write about combining music in a way that empowers it? It all comes down to personal taste. And experience, developing an ear for what sounds right. Pictures of different scratch techniques won't mean much without knowing the sounds you're going for. And pictures of beat matching won't make any sense unless you've sequenced beats before. I've done all these things before so it worked out for me.

The real value in this book was about the DJ culture. Where to find gigs, how to know your audience, how to read a room. The differences between warming up a crowd and playing peak hours. These chapters were real gems, indispensible wisdom for people like myself without friends in the business. I felt like it was worth the price of admission for just these chapters.

The only thing I would ask for would be more chapters dedicated to different musical styles, and mixing them. It felt like a gaping hole in the book.

Mini prints of Rackham's Fairy Tale Illustrations

This slim book presents 55 of Arthur Rackham's fairy tale illustrations from several of his books. The illustrations are reproduced on high quality paper. Almost every image is at least 5x7 or 6x8 inches in size and suitable for framing. While I don't usually recommend deconstructing books for their illustrations, this book is well-suited for the purpose and preferable to taking apart an older book for its plates. No fairy tales are presented, just the illustrations with their titles and sources. If you are a Rackham fan, buy one copy to take apart for framing and another one to keep on your bookshelf. Most of these illustrations are not available in any size for art prints. Many of the illustrations are not available in print in any other source at this time except for the original antique books in which they appeared.

True colors show true subtlety and magic of Rackham!

I heartily concur with the estimations of Rackham's value to the area of children's book illustrations. Look for Rackham's Mother Goose and Alice in Wonderland from Chancellor Press to introduce your little ones to his illustrations is book form, as well as Favorite Tales From Grimm. But my desire here is to point out the true color found in this collection of Rackham's illustrations. Beware, as some books republished with his pictures do not capture the subtlety of his use of color. He used dark colors and gently colored objects in all of his pictures. This book, along with Dover's other Rackham collections show his work in all its glory, the subtle and the grotesque simultaneously. A delight for any collector of Rackham, suitable for framing.

Albert Camus (1913-1960) was a French author, journalist, and philosopher, who won the 1957 Nobel Prize for Literature for his novels such as The Stranger, The Plague, The Fall, etc. He also wrote nonfiction such as The Myth of Sisyphus: And Other Essays, The Rebel: An Essay on Man in Revolt, Lyrical and Critical Essays, etc.

[NOTE: page numbers below refer to a 272-page paperback edition.]

He states in one letter, “What is truth, you used to ask? To be sure, but at least we know what falsehood is; that is just what you have taught us. What is spirit? We know its contrary, which is murder. What is man? There I stop you, for we know. Man is that force which ultimately cancels all tyrants and gods. He is the force of evidence. Human evidence is what we must preserve, and our certainty at present comes from the fact that its fate and our country’s fate are linked together. If nothing had any meaning, you would be right. But there is something that still has a meaning.” (Pg. 14)

In another letter, he says, “I… chose justice in order to remain faithful to the world. I continue to believe that this world has no ultimate meaning. But I know that something in it has a meaning and that is man, because he is the only creature to insist on having one. This world has at least the truth of man; and our task is to provide it justifications against fate itself. And it has no justification but man; hence he must be saved if we want to save the idea we have of life.” (Pg. 28)

He observes, “Nothing is given to men, and the little they can conquer is paid for with unjust deaths. But man’s greatness lies elsewhere. It lies in his decision to be stronger than his condition. And if his condition is unjust, he has only one way of overcoming it, which is to be just himself. Our truth of this evening… is just what consoles man. And our hearts are at peace, just as the hearts of our dead comrades are at peace, because we can say as victory returns, without any spirit or revenge of spite: ‘We did what was necessary.’” (Pg. 39-40)

He said in a lecture given at the Dominican Monastery at Latour-Maubourg in 1948, “I should like first to acknowledge your intellectual generosity by stating a few principles. First, there is a lay pharisaism in which I shall strive not to indulge. To me a lay Pharisee is the person who pretends to believe that Christianity is an easy thing and asks of the Christian… more than he asks of himself. I believe indeed that the Christian has many obligations but that it is not up to man who rejects them himself to recall their existence to anyone who has already accepted them. If there is anyone who can ask anything of the Christian, it is the Christian himself… The other day… a Catholic priest said in public that he too was anticlerical. Well, I don’t like priests who are anticlerical any more than philosophies that are ashamed of themselves. Hence I shall not… try to pass myself off as a Christian in your presence. I share with you the same revulsion from evil. But I do not share your hope, and I continue to struggle against this universe in which children suffer and die.” (Pg. 69-71)

He suggests, “It is true that freedom, when it is made up principally of privileges, insults labor and separates it from culture. But freedom is not made up principally of privileges; it is made up especially of duties. And the moment each of us tries to give freedom’s duties precedence over its privileges, freedom joins together labor and culture and sets in motion the only force that can effectively serve justice.” (Pg. 96)

He admits, “I confess, insofar as I am concerned, that I cannot love all humanity except with a vast and somewhat abstract love. But I love a few men, living or dead, with such force and admiration that I am always eager to preserve in others what will someday perhaps make them resemble those I love. Freedom is nothing else but a chance to be better, whereas enslavement is a certainty of the worst.” (Pg. 102-103) He continues, “If, after all, men cannot always make history have a meaning, they can always act so that their own lives have one.” (Pg. 106)

In his “Reflections on the Guillotine” essay, he suggests, “If fear of death is, indeed, a fact, another fact is that such fear, however great it may be, has never sufficed to quell human passions. Bacon is right in saying that there is no passion so weak that it cannot confront and overpower fear of death. Revenge, love, honor, pain, another fear manage to overcome it… For centuries the death penalty… has been trying to hold crime in check; yet crime persists. Why? Because the instincts that are warring in man are not, as the law claims, constant forces in a state of equilibrium. They are variable forces constantly waxing and waning, and their repeated lapses from equilibrium nourish the life of the mind as electrical oscillations, when close enough, set up a current.” (Pg. 190)

Later, he adds, “even in its primitive form [the law of retaliation] can operate only between two individuals of whom one is absolutely innocent and the other absolutely guilty. The victim, to be sure, is innocent. But can the society who is supposed to represent the victim lay claim to innocence? Is it not responsible, at least in part, for the crime it punishes so severely?” (Pg. 206) He concludes, “the abolition of the death penalty ought to be asked for by all thinking members of our society, for reasons both of logic and realism.” (Pg. 220)

These essays have some of Camus’ most interesting writing on political topics, and this book will be of great interest to anyone studying his thought.

Alan Weintraub is an architectural photographer whose recent work includes Bay Area Style. Alan Hess is an architectural writer and author of Rizzoli's The Architecture of John Lautner. Kenneth Frampton is Ware Professor of Architecture at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation. Thomas S. Hines is Professor of History and Architecture at UCLA. Bruce Brooks Pfeiffer is Director of the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives at the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Kathryn Smith is an architecture historian, preservation consultant, author and lecturer. Margo Stipe is Registrar of the Frank Lloyd Wright Archives at the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation. Eric Lloyd Wright, great grandson of Frank Lloyd Wright, is an architect based in California.

Must have for Wright fans

If you have already read the other reviews you know how good this book is. I wish they had this available when I first started getting interested in Frank Lloyd Wright back in college. All they had then were the dingy, dark, older pictures that really didn't convey just how great some of Mr. Wright's houses were. These new pictures really show how much genius he had in design. What is even more apparant when you see some of these new pictures is just how much mastery he had for setting up a home with natural light. Simply put, if you have the money and are even a casual fan, you should just treat yourself and get the book.

Best Wright House Photos!

I honestly do not know how many Wright books I have(40-50?). There are better photos of one house like Fallingwater in specific books devoted to one house, but that being said, this is the best book of photos of Wright Houses, particularly Usonian houses that I have ever seen. It is simply stunning. Even the site photographs are magnificent. When you compare the houses that have been moved from their original site(Pope-Leighy, Gordon)to those that have not it makes the genius of Wright even more amazing.

If you are a fan of Frank Lloyd Wright, do not miss this!!
